Interesting Mall of Memphis site...

It really suffered from a lot of undue bad publicity. More people have been murdered at the Oak Court Mall than were ever murdered at the "Mall of Murder".

And now it is a vast grassy field....so sad.

You know, I didn't really think anything about it and was browsing the site until I found the pic of the old ceiling from the skating rink, and I remembered that, and how packed the place was at Christmas time, and all the times I was there as a kid, and the wooden animals at the play area that I hated them removing for a week or two when Santa came in town. Yeah, I miss the old mall from the 80's. When it didn't suck.

I remember that ceiling, too. In fact, I had been wondering where that was when I saw it on the site. I used to throw a fit when I didn't get to go to the play area with the wooden animals :)

In my high school years especially, the Mall of Memphis was THE mall to go to. Oak Court was too uppity (back when they had the garden and stage) and Wolfchase didn't exist. I can remember skipping school and going to lunch there with Kate. It's also where I took ice skating and had my first job. From the time I was a toddler until far into college I was there on average at least 1 night a week.

The thing that makes me mad is that it got a much worse reputation than it actually had. It really wasn't that bad. I never felt like it was unsafe.

*sigh*

I'm glad some of the pics brought back memories - please consider sharing your memories on the Mall site visitor page - everyone enjoys it when memories are shared.

Thanks,

Doug Force
