Dollhouse 2x13: Epitaph Two: Return

Jan 30, 2010 11:07

Well, I'll start with the fact that "Return" is infinitely better than "The Return"!

Since Epitaph One Echo/Ballard really smacked of S7 Spuffy, I may be taking Echo's breakdown as Joss's post-S7 projection of Buffy's psychology...
Nods. That I'm all alone speech really sounded like Buffy post-"Chosen".

Joss doesn't have a fetish for lesbian redheads.

Yeah, caught that as well.

Adelle was absolutely fantastic

The shepherd leads them into the light.

Mixing metaphors creates a rather wonderful irony...

And I think that kind of thought was reflected in the rest of the episode, which was really, really good. And well thought-out. And such a contrast to Epitaph One, which was all about the BIG statements and THE WORLD in contrast to the little things.

Word.

Heh, you're not the only one. But I agree, it definitely helped me to care about them as a couple, because up until now, I haven't. (Also, I'd mention that we have yet another example of Joss' favorite trope, but the Anya-esque way Ballard got killed actually made me gasp, so I didn't have time to roll my eyes that he'd ruined another couple's potential happiness.)

Though, I have to say, sticking Ballard in her head? NOT FUNCTIONAL!

Agreed. Someone else came up with the idea that reformed!Alpha should've offered to be imprinted with Paul, which I think would've been creepy!cool. Echo with Paul in her head? Just creepy.

I feel kind of ( ... )

Even poor Adelle-Topher wasn't immune from the carnage ( ... )

Oh, Alpha!Ballard would definitely be complicated, but the thing that bothers me about Echo!Ballard is that it's just compounding her loneliness in a way. Now that she feels content with the "connection" she's made, she doesn't need to connect with real, actual people who exist outside her head. At least Alpha is a separate person (who seems to love her already), even if he'd be sort of Paul, too ( ... )

:waves: Read your reviews now, and though I can't say I agree with them exactly because, having post-Buffy comic stress disorder, I couldn't be bothered to give Joss the benefit of the doubt the way I used it, I can see that generally we're in agreement, in that you stopped liking the show around the half way point - when Joss did his Big Leap Forward and ruined it, I mean.

However, it seems you liked Epitaph Two? I admit, I hated it. Really, really hated it.

ETA: and then I re-read your comment on my Dollhouse post and remembered that you'd since changed your mind. Sorry.

*waves back* I can't really remember what I said anymore, but I imagine I would have a lot less benefit of the doubt to give Joss now too. (Although I'm not sure it ever really was about Joss for me - I'm fairly certain he meant Echo to be the hero of the piece, but things worked out conveniently enough for me to love her as a creepy antihero.) And I'm sure you saw that people tended to disagree as things went along!

Epitaph Two... I can't lie and say I didn't enjoy it at first, but I was fairly caught up in the Spuffy transference (and Echo being so creepy as to put Ballard in her head). I think I was also on a high of things taking a turn for the better after everything had got so terrible for weeks on end; I did love Dollhouse rather a lot. And at least it wasn't fake!evil!DeWitt bad. Maybe. (The deaths were ridiculous though.)

Yes, I also noticed that you got a lot fewer comments. Whether that was because people disagreed with you, or because they were so disenchanted themselves they couldn't be bothered any more, I couldn't say.

but I was fairly caught up in the Spuffy transference

See, I wouldn't even have noticed that if rebcake hadn't asked me about it. I put that down to the bloody comics. After reading season 8, it just didn't occur to me to think Buffy would ever have felt that strongly about Spike dying. I think she was more ' that's a shame, because he was quite good at sex' and that was it.

Thanks for nothing, Joss.

I agree it had its good points. And I'm glad drunk!evil!DeWitt turned out to be fake.
