title: More than Doubles
pairings: D1 & Jackal x Marui
rating: pg-13
genre: sap, light drama
summary: Marui may see something Jackal can't, but is he really seeing what he's supposed to be seeing? Or is he looking at the wrong direction? Kirihara sits and listens.
Author’s Notes: After using Yanagi for Sanada and Yukimura, I decided to use Kirihara for his other sempai-tachi. This is the closest I can get to a D1 fic without tearing my hair because I don’t think it will be good enough. Anyway, I hope you like it~!
Disclaimers: Tennis no Oujisama and all its characters belong to Konomi Takeshi. Only the plot is mine.

More than Doubles
“Bet you two weeks without cakes.”
“You don’t need to bet me anything, Marui.”
“Oh, c’mon, Jackal. Don’t be such a spoilsport. What do you bet?”
Kirihara watched his sempai-tachi from afar - thanking that even with the distance, he could still hear their conversation. It was bound to be interesting.
“What are betting about anyway?”
“Che. Weren’t you even listening to me? Niou and Yagyuu, of course!”
Oh yes, Kirihara thought. When it involved that tricky doubles pair, it was always interesting. Plus he was curious about how Jackal and Marui saw those two.
“Whether they’re just a doubles pair or more than that?”
“Un. I’m betting that they’re more than that.”
“Two weeks, Marui? You sure?”
“Of course, I’m sure. What are you betting?”
“Hmm… two weeks without shaving.”
“Fair enough.”
Two weeks without cakes or two weeks without shaving? The second year didn’t know which was more frightening or hilarious. Whoever won this bet would be making the whole tennis club into hell on earth in the nest weeks.
But, why was Marui willing to risk two weeks without cakes? Was he too sure about it?
“How can you say that it isn’t just doubles? If it’s ever more than it, it’s just…”
“You’re red, Jackal. It’s just what?”
“I don’t need to say it, Marui. You know what I mean.”
“Tensai as I am, I don’t.”
“Fine. With Niou, it’s probably just sex.”
Kirihara blinked. Did he just hear Jackal say that?
“Wow. Never thought you’d say that, Jackal.”
“Shut up.”
“Hehe… You think it’s just sex?”
“You know Niou. He’s just probably playing with Yagyuu.”
“Nah. Niou isn’t playing. He’s serious about Yagyuu.”
Watching Niou and Yagyuu’s interaction, there was a part of him that doubted that the former wasn’t just playing with his partner. But Yagyuu wasn’t stupid; he probably knew that it was nothing serious. Yet, if that was the case, wouldn’t it be more likely that his bespectacled sempai would break the doubles pair?
After all, there was still golf for him. Tennis wasn’t his real sport.
“What makes you say that?”
“They have this connection, Jackal. A connection that makes them be invincible on court. It makes that switch possible.”
“And with that as basis, you say that it’s not about…”
“Yes, it’s not only about sex.”
“I’m not Yanagi but can’t you achieve that connection there as well?”
Marui was holding himself, preventing himself from rolling on the bleachers. He was laughing too hard and in Kirihara’s opinion, he should be holding onto something as well. He didn’t want anyone know he was listening into his sempai-tachi’s conversation.
“How could you even know such things, Jackal? I never would’ve thought that… Kami. Yanagi would love to know this…”
“You will not tell Yanagi about this, baka!”
“Hahahaha… I can’t stop laughing!”
“I’m going to strangle you if you don’t stop laughing. I’m serious, Marui.”
“Fine, fine. So you still think it’s just sex?”
“Uh, yeah.”
“See, Jackal, the connection you achieve there won’t make your bond as invincible as theirs. If I’m going to follow your line of thought, you’re saying that for Niou, Yagyuu is just a casual sex partner.”
It was a nice way to put it, Kirihara thought. And Marui had a point. Sex without something deeper between them - and he wasn’t talking about anything hentai here - won’t forge a bond between two people.
“So you’re saying Niou feels something for Yagyuu?”
“I’m saying that although we don’t see it, Niou and Yagyuu actually feel something deeper for each other. It might just look like a game because Niou’s involved, but I think our trickster has found someone he can’t trick.”
“He can’t trick Yagyuu?”
“Yeah.”
“And that would be because?”
“Because Niou found out he could not trick his own heart.”
“Wait. You’re confusing me. He can’t trick Yagyuu because he can’t trick his own heart?”
“Un.”
“You lost me somewhere there, Marui.”
This, in the second year’s opinion, was becoming more confusing than hearing Yanagi speak about all those philosophers and those formulas in chemistry.
“See, when they confuse their opponents, they switch places with one another, right? Yagyuu becomes Niou and Niou becomes Yagyuu.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Their hearts became one, however cheesy that sounded. Niou’s heart was Yagyuu’s own and vice versa.”
“And you’re betting me two weeks without cakes based on that intangible proof?”
“Love has never been tangible.”
“Love?”
“Love.”
“I thought it was only a bond.”
“You know, I could argue with you the whole century and I still wouldn’t be able to achieve anything.”
“Marui… I’m just saying I don’t understand. One minute we were talking about bonds and how it’s not just sex, then you say love.”
“Yare-yare. They were right to give you that nickname.”
“Huh? See, Marui? This is what I mean. You change subjects…”
“You’re a wall, Jackal. You wouldn’t know.”
Kirihara watched the redhead walk away, leaving his partner behind. Perhaps, the tensai was right in speculating that the Niou-Yagyuu doubles pair wasn’t just about sex. Perhaps it was more than just a bond or more than the doubles they play.
But there was one thing he was wrong about. Something he failed to see, tensai as he was.
Jackal wasn’t a wall. If what his partner said was true, he could very well feel what both Niou and Yagyuu were feeling. Only in his case, it was more of a one-sided affair.
Because for him, he and Marui weren’t just partners.
It was more than doubles as well.
