A/N:How I think Danny felt during the wedding and reception.
Prequel:
"Pretend" It all happened really quickly. Almost like someone pushed the FORWARD button on his life and pressed PLAY so abruptly that there’s that moment of transition where it glitches for a couple of seconds; a pause before it actually starts back up. And it was during that pause right before it plays again, that it all truly hits him.
Tom and Giovanna are married. It all happened so fast.
Danny stood right next to Tom as he said his vows.
Stood next to him and watched as he promised Giovanna the rest of his life.
Stood next to him and watched but not really listening as Tom said “I do”.
Stood next to him and watched as he slid the diamond ring on her finger.
Stood next to him and looked down as they kissed for the first time as husband and wife.
Smiled as everyone cheered and joined in on the clapping as they walked down the aisle, hands joined in holy matrimony. All he wanted to do was lie down somewhere that was quiet and sleep for days, months, years.
He is at the reception now. There are too many people. The music is too loud; there is too much laughter. He’s standing as far away from everyone as possible, leaning back against a wall and aimlessly looking around the room with a drink in hand. How many drinks was this now? He’d lost count.
It’s a beautiful reception. All the decorations, the entertainment, and atmosphere was perfect for celebration. The only thing out of place was Danny.
He gave a speech earlier, as was the expectations. Didn’t really remember what all was said. He remembered there being some laughs and some “aww’s” in the crowd.
Georgia flits into his mind. He does love her, just not in the same way he does Tom. It was all so complicated. He wasn’t even sure himself quite how to explain the difference of love he felt for both of them. He finds her sitting at a table with Izzy, both laughing about something.
“Hey,” a soft voice suddenly interrupts his thoughts. He turns and sees Giovanna. Her gown hugs her shape in all the right places, and her hair is down in soft cascading curls. She looks radiant, just as a bride should.
Clearing his throat, he smiles. “Hi, Gi. You really do look gorgeous,” he says honestly. She grins and shrugs her shoulders in a ah-what-can-I-say gesture, making him laugh.
He’s always liked Giovanna, that was what made everything so difficult. She’s sweet natured and always so happy and optimistic. She’s warm and caring. She’s perfect for Tom.
“Enjoying yourself over here?” she asks, leaning against the wall with him, looking out at the crowd dancing in the middle of the room.
“I am,” he answers automatically with little feeling. Danny’s eyes land on Tom at that moment as he was doing some silly dance with Dougie and Harry, laughing. He looks so handsome in his tuxedo. Some of his blonde hair falls in his face as he jumps around. Seeing him laugh and smile made the corners of Danny’s lips curve a little.
“I don’t mind, you know,” her voice filters in again, gently. “I’ve always known.”
Eyebrows furrowing, Danny turns his head and looks down in Giovanna’s eyes. She’s smiling, head tilted to the side a bit. “Known what?”
She looks out at where Tom is. “That you love him too.”
Danny’s heart picks up pace and he feels his face heat up immediately. “Uh, I don’t know what-”
“Oh, hush, Danny, I’m not daft! I see the way you look at him, and whether you know it or not, he looks at you the same way too. And at me. He loves both of us,” she says it like it’s nothing. “It’s something I’ve learned to accept because I love him.” She looks back at Danny, smile still there.
He’s not sure how to respond, not sure about everything she just said. This was just all so very… unexpected.
Reaching out, she grabs his free hand and squeezes it. “I really do understand, Danny. You two have been through so much together, I mean much of your experiences and memories involve each other. You both share something no one else can possibly touch,” her voice is soft. “Really, without you he’d be a mess, and everyone knows that without me he’d be an absolute disaster,” she laughs. “I think that the both of us combined makes Tom complete. I don’t think he could be without either of us, really.”
And in that simple statement, she perfectly described how he felt about Tom and Georgia. He loved them both in different ways, but he really didn’t want to be without one or the other. But feeling like Tom was being taken away from him felt like he had lost his supply of oxygen. Tom really wasn’t being taken away from him, though.
He holds his gaze on her and nods. “I… thanks, Gi,” he says, still at a loss for words.
She grins, squeezing his hand again. “Now will you stop being an outcast and come join everyone on the dance floor?”
Laughing again, he nods. She drags him out on the dance floor and there is a loud cheer of people. Dougie bounces over and does a goofy move, and soon Harry and Tom join in. His heart finally lifts up out of his stomach, and happiness fills him again. As the music changes, all four of them come in together in a group hug.
This was a big change for them all. A huge moment.
A slow song slowly comes on, and it’s time to clear the dance floor for the bride and groom. They break apart and each takes turn to hug Giovanna and Tom before exiting the dance floor. Harry hugs Tom first, whispering a few words before turning to Gi. Dougie does the same thing. It was finally Danny’s turn. His eyes connect with Tom’s and he sees that there are tears in it. He comes in for a full body hug, the crushing kind. Tom’s arms encircle him as he rests his chin on Danny’s shoulders. Danny’s hands go up and rest at the nape of Tom’s neck, and it’s an intimate hug.
“I’m so happy for you,” Danny whispers, and he means it wholeheartedly.
They part and rest foreheads against each other, Danny’s eyes welling up with tears as well.
“Thank you, Dan,” he smiles. And the doubt he’s always felt about Tom’s feelings towards him is answered when Tom locks eyes with him. He feels it completely.
“Love you,” he says simply.
“Love you too.”
With one last smile, they part. “Now go get your gorgeous bride,” Danny shouts, making the audience cheer.
Giovanna laughs and comes over to quickly give Danny a hug. Everyone clears the dance floor and Giovanna and Tom come together. They look beautiful; young, happy, and in love.
Danny stands off to the side and watches, smiling. He feels someone slip their hand into his and he turns to see Georgia. She looks beautiful as well in her red dress. She leans down and rests her head on his shoulder. “Hey,” he says gently.
“They look so happy, don’t they?” she asks.
“They do,” he answers as he moves to wrap an arm around her waist.
They watch a little as Tom and Giovanna dance together, and eventually different couples start making their way slowly to the dance floor as well, joining them. Danny moves and gently pulls Georgia on as well.
She gives a little laugh as she wraps her arms around his shoulder and leans in.
“You look beautiful,” he tells her, smiling.
“And you look quite dashing yourself,” she tugs at his tie and quickly kisses his nose.
He spins her and in that brief moment, makes eye contact with Tom as he looks over Giovanna’s shoulder. They share a smile, and then he focuses back on Georgia.
Things have changed. He knows it’s not going to be the same anymore for a lot of reasons. And he finds, as he looks at Georgia, that he’s okay with knowing that now.
