PREMEDitated murder

GRRRR! One of the requirements to all medical schools is one year of calculus. Now I understand that some parts of calculus are perfectly applicable, but others are utterly ridiculous! It's not like I'll be working in the ER and all of a sudden, "woah woah woah, Doctor Diana, I've got a krazay idea; get this, instead of amputating this man's leg, ( Read more... )

that sounds about right... vinny_da_groin February 10 2004, 03:11:56 UTC
Woohoo! First post! I know what you mean. It's like, "DAMMIT! If I can't determine the convergence of this series...this man will die! If only I'd paid more attention in Cal 2! I didn't KNOW!!!" Still though, I don't know about you, but Calculus just helps me make a little bit more more sense out of the world. Oh, +2 cool points for the Maiden song.

Hey Vintastic, thanks again for the calc book you sent me; tonight it has kept me from throwing the Emory Calc book off the roof of my dorm (ala my 28 pound pumpkin). I would have still done it, but it would have made me think of parabolic arcs and then back to math, which would defeat the entire purpose. I may be destructive, but I'll be damned if I'm not productive!

Oh I know. Yeah, that Cal book by Larson kicks Stewart's ass. Whenever I go to study sessions with other people in Cal, they're always like, "d00d, you have to let me see this book!" and I'm like "Sure...for a price." Honestly, the Stewart book is just difficult to learn from as a whole whereas Larson seems to know how to write a textbook for the student who is teaching himself. But yeah, then people suffer heap big buyer's remorse and start demanding their souls/firstborn/virginity/milk money back when I tell them that they can get Larson at Amazon for about 4-10$. Still though, I'd have to say that the worst textbook I've ever gotten was the AP World History one. I drop kicked that one so many times...and Thomas freely admits to having cut open a battery over it.

Just so you know, if you ever left an abacus inside my body during surgery as a result of some on the spot calculus-ations, I wouldn't sue for malpractice. Cause we're friends and all.

Speaking for myself, I think I'd almost be proud to have an abacus, sliderule, or adding machine. Like those bars of soap, only instead of a freaky plastic animal, there is a relic of the past!
