Fanfic: Facade

She enveloped his cold hand in hers.

She entwined her fingers around his, shifted in the bed of black feathers, moved closer to her prince until their noses were nearly touching.

She stared into his eyes, golden and perfect and lifeless.

This was how it should be. This was how it was supposed to be.

“Mytho, tell me you love me.”

The words floated mechanically from his lips. “I love you.”

“Really?”

There was no response.

“Mytho, hold me in your arms and tell me you love me.”

After a moment of stillness, Rue had to resort to placing Mytho’s limp arms around her waist. He said nothing. Her brows furrowed. She reached up a hand and began to stroke and twirl it through his hair - his lovely, shining white hair. Lovely and perfect and…

“Kiss me, Mytho.”

Nothing. No movement, no change in his behavior.

Silence.

His blank expression stung her more painfully than any words ever could.

She pressed her lips against his, held them there, closed her eyes and struggled to enjoy the moment. But, as expected, there was no reciprocation, no reaction on Mytho’s part.

She didn’t know why she so desperately tried to ignite some sort of response in him. But anything, anything would be better than this. Even if he pushed her away, rejected her, told her he loathed her… at least it would be something.

She pulled away, gazed into those perfect golden eyes once more.

“Won’t you say something, Mytho?”

He gave no answer.

She felt bitterness rising, frustration welling up inside of her… but she restrained it.

What was she thinking? Why was she so upset? She should be glad at this turn of events. He was hers. She had him right where she wanted him. He was hers, and nothing - no one - could take him away. It didn’t matter that he didn’t have a heart. It didn’t matter that he was a soulless puppet with no thoughts or feelings or passion. He was hers, and that was all that mattered.

She pushed the doubt and negative thoughts away.

“Yes,” she whispered to herself, “I finally have everything I ever wanted.”

She planted a tender kiss on his cheek. She curled up slightly and rested her head against his chest.

Her ear pressed against the spot where his heart would have been. Smiling, sighing, she imagined that she heard the faint, steady beating of his warm and precious heart.

There was nothing missing. There was nothing wrong.

Everything was as it should be.
