The woes of a "true" music fan

Quite some time ago, I stumbled upon an article posted on an MP3 blog that decried the “Garden State effect”. For those of you not wanting to wade through an angst-ridden, quasi-philosophical diatribe against popular culture and all of its “evils”, I’ll paraphrase for you:

I wasn't decrying the 'Garden State Effect', that was just a borrowed term to get the discussion going. The one thing I was sure of was that people would call me elitist for it, despite my clearly pointing out I didn't have any problem at all with pop culture, was trying to suggest possible reasons people do have a problem with it, and certainly wasn't going to write a "quasi-philosophical diatribe" against it ( ... )

Yay! A response!

Shane, let's start off by this division between "true" and "false" advertising. I'm not entirely clear what the difference is. Clearing that up would get the ball rolling and ensure that we're not talking past each other.

Do I think you're an elistist? Not necessarily. My larger point here is that elitism is simply not possible in the postmodern world. Nothing more, nothing less. And it really was less of a diatribe against you than it was a diatribe against hipster culture in general, or proto-hipsters, or whatever you'd like to call it. You may not sneer, but if you don't think some of your friends, associates, and fellow bloggers aren't sneering, I think you're kind of deluded.

Also, if you could clarify in a sentence or two what, precisely, you were trying to say with the article, then I'd like to see that, too. Again, just so we're not talking past each other. I honestly thought that I understood the article, but it's entirely possible that I did not.

I said: "The simple definition of a hipster is the person to blame for something wonderful being coldly analysed and marketed so no-one knows the difference. They fall for the marketing, just like the people who fall for spam emails and keep them coming to everyone else." That's oversimplified, but I still think it's basically true ( ... )
