Allies were only sought in times of struggle or when a kingdom was on the brink of dying. That is still the way, correct?

Sort of. We still look for allies if there's a war, but there's also trade. A country just can't isolate itself anymore.

You can trade, too, if you're neutral, but smaller countries usually end up drawn into a side.
