let's see - some of my favorites were helping me help myself, green grows in the city, the suspicions of mr. wincher, our man in havanna, what was lost, the last fish tale, the guernsey literary and potato peel pie society, both of the books by tana french, the wordy shipmates and an exactly replica of a figment of my imagination. and you can never go wrong with wodehouse or diana wynne jones.
also great on the kid/y.a. front: the books by hilary mckay and libba bray, jellicoe road, the hunger games, the graveyard book and jellicoe road. and same difference is great, but not out yet.

also, kudos for the ellie mcdoodle books. the first was the last i read of the year (obviously) and the sequel the first of this one. they're terrific, and i can't wait to start foisting them on young patrons.

Thank you for your kind words on Ellie McDoodle. It's an honor to be your mid-season bookends for 2008 and 2009.
The last I heard, my agent and editor loved the premise for book 3 -- animals, specifically a bird -- and I am calmly awaiting a list of deadlines (when it arrives my life switches to panic mode).
