"I was there. When your father first brought you in. You were a normal girl. Unicorns and rainbows. And then they started the testing. The human brain isn't built to take that much electricity. You poor girl."

"My father would never let that happen."

"Your father was leading the charge."

"I don't remember any of that."

The first time Elle's sparks fly from her hands, neither of her parents are around. She's in her room, pouting, because Daddy is too busy to play with her. All she feels is anger and annoyance and she wishes she could just zap something. Make Daddy pay attention to her.

Then, there's a funny feeling, one her little body is not used to. Her blue eyes widen and her mouth opens in an O as she sees something fly from her fingertips. Streaky, light blue, and very hot. It runs into the floor and Elle stares at her hand with wonder.

She did that?

---

The next time sparks fly, her mother is there. Her mother's eyes grow wide as she watches sparks stream across the room, leaving little scorch marks on the wallpaper.

"Elle..."

"Aren't you proud of me, Mommy?"

There's a slight pause that Elle doesn't catch. She's too busy staring the scorched wallpaper. "Yes, of course, I'm proud of you. But let's keep this a secret between you and me for now."

And so they do. Elle never mentions a word to her daddy about her pretty blue sparks, only a proud smile to her mother as she keeps the secret.

---

Elle likes to practice her new ability when she's alone in her room. She giggles with delight as sparks flit between her little fingers with a few wayward strands hitting the floor. A few burned holes in the carpet are nothing to her, not when she has this to make her special.

But the minute she hears the door slam, she knows that her daddy is back and she needs to stop. A small frown appears on her face because she knows this might make Daddy pay attention to her but Mommy knows best, right?

---

The day Daddy sees her sparks is when her life changes forever. Elle hadn't meant to let the secret slip. But he wouldn't come to school to see her in her class play. She was going to be Sleeping Beauty! Stomping her foot, her anger again manifests itself into sparks.

Though this time, instead of burn marks on the wall or the smell of singed carpet, a fire starts. It spreads quickly, barely enough time for Bob to scoop Elle up and run outside. Elle's mother and grandmother aren't so lucky.

Bob shields Elle from the two charred, burnt bodies that are carried out from the house, hidden from the word beneath a solitary white sheet. His mouth is set in a firm line but his eyes betray his emotions. As sad as he was about his wife's death, he just found a new project.

---

Elle's life is now contained within this prison called Primatech. Technically, it's not a prison. But it might as well be. She's lost track of how many years she's spent cooped up in her, under the watchful eyes of her solemn father.

She barely remembers her past, only can imagine from the small snippets of conversation between her shrink and her father. House burning down, blacking out counties, mother's death...it all blends together to her. But she thinks she was happy once. Maybe even loved by a mother she no longer remembers.

Her pretty little power. The one thing she loves and hates. Because it finally made Daddy look at her but it also took away life as she had once known it. Her gift is a blessing and a curse.

---

"Kill me. Take my power. Kill me to make the pain stop."
