15x1: Back and to the Future

Oct 11, 2019 15:47

Here we are, at the beginning of the end of all things. Or, well, Supernatural at any rate. Bittersweet, for damned sure. I'm going to try to comment on each episode this season, because if not now … when? ( Let's kick this in the ass... )

It felt like they had a list on a whiteboard of the points they had to hit in this episode and just checked them off without any finesse :(

I am equal parts intrigued and terrified about the glimpse we got of scary Sam when Cas tried to heal the God-wound. It is either going to be very good--or excruciatingly awful.

The hardest part of watching this season for me is going to be the anxiety of waiting for the screw-ups. Because I have zero confidence that the season will be uniformly good and yet I can't help hoping for some individually great episodes...

This is a very appropriate way to feel, I won't argue one bit. Dabb and "finesse" will never be in the same room together. It's especially poignant when you do an older-season's rewatch (as I'm doing right now; I'm mid-season two). It's just painful sometimes. I'm giving this last season the benefit of the doubt (because it's all we've got left unaired), but anyone who says the Dabb era is the best of the best? I have to question their discretion and taste. (Apologies to anyone who believes such! I welcome you to convince me otherwise!)

That's not to say Dabb won't give us plenty of fodder for fanworks creation, though. BRING ON THE FIX-IT FICS!

Yep!

And may I add that I've been re-watching S2 as well. It's one of my favorites -- maybe my favorite. Not only does it have great scripts, cinematography, and scares, but the boys really become a team again with concerned Dean as a bonus throughout.

I think the ghosts all came through in one place because someone mentioned the Hell Gate (though why there and not where the previous Hell Gate was, who knows). Though if we are really to believe literal billions of Hell souls have been unleashed on the world, there must be other Hell Gates or that story element is already fixed (albeit bad news for that little town).
Plus Belphegor trapped all the ghosts INside the town but there's nothing to stop people wandering home when they realise they can...

So yeah, plot holes all over the place and clunky - but we had lots of hurt!Sam and Sam running and Dean being all Sam!focussed and Cas (thankfully) having something to do that made sense for a change, and Belphegor!Jack was a lot of fun. So for once, the plusses outweigh the minuses! Yay!

I also dug Dean's unease at Belphegor's fanboying over his history with Hell torture, and the worry over Michael loose again in the universe. I feel like that stuff's going to rear its ugly head later too. *rubs palms together*

ah, I wanted some fan reviews/spoilers and you delivered! I want to watch sometime this weekend and I like to know what I'm in for! And eh... plot-shmot. SASSY, yesssss! #SamBoob FTW. (You sense my priorities here...)

It was very good for pretty Sam doings, no question! And Cas actually had a point of view and purpose, which is a rarity these days. Dean was a little light? But I know he's got some good stuff coming up. While these Dabbish episodes pale in comparison to what the show once was, I think we're gonna get lots of juicy fanservice this season. And in summation: #SamBoob

Thank you for pointing out how silly they looked running down that suburban street in broad daylight. Why did somebody think THAT was a good idea?? Except that Sam looks good running, I guess...!

Oh, the Samulet! I missed that!

I'm very curious about the vision of Sam all evil and sneery. Was that Castiel's vision? I thought it was Sam's! I'll have to watch it again.

Thanks for this awesome review. I'm so glad you'll be there for us each week this season. I feel like we all need to prop each other up. It's going to be such a roller-coaster.

I also wondered if it was Sam's vision or Cas' but upon rewatch, I'm going to guess it's Cas'? But don't quote me!

It is going to be a tough season. Finger's crossed we'll get some gems in there!

It seemed to me that Sam reacted with distress after having the vision when Cas tried to heal him. Cas didn't have a reaction other than annoyed he couldn't heal the wound.

You may be right! To be honest, I'm not sure either of the actors knew specifically what what their characters were reacting to...

Great review! I agree with you about the music. Invasive and not even matching the action. I didn’t like the opening song either because when they moved from montage to action it didn’t fit at all.

I love Bob Segar, the opening to season 6 was damn near perfect this was a miss 😕

I think Dean doesn’t trust Demon!Jack and deliberately put the God gun away in front of the demon to see if/when he makes a play for it.

I LOL’d when the Demon says when he was alive they worshipped a rock shaped like a penis and everyone had humps 😂

Overall a B- and I hope they don’t spend a whole 1/2 season on ghosts of Christmas past!

If we had a smarter writing staff? I'd say maybe? We shall see!

I enjoyed Belphagor a lot, and Alex did a smashing job with him. I think I'm in the B- range myself, and as much as revisiting the past *could* be moving? I don't trust this bunch of writers enough to not ruin it (though I do love Perez's scripts, as a rule). I'm gonna enjoy this last season as much as I can!
