This has been irritating me for several months.

Because I've been wishing for a black disney heroine since I was five they've got all the other colors godammit. But the problem is that I'm not five anymore, and I'm just not going to be able to apprecate it on such a shallow level because it's A) too little too late and B) OMG they're getting it ( Read more... )

toons, racecard, movies

I still hold that they haven't done anything even vaguely envelope-pushing in terms of social issues since Hunchback of Notre Dame. Which they now quietly ignore having ever maaaaaade... 9_9

Haha yeeeah and since I watched that one again recently for the first time since it came out, it was interesting that I didn't care much for it as a kid but now I am like WOW this movie is like, really GOOD? holy crap lol

The problem is in the case of Frog Princess what's going on is the polar opposite of envelope pushing. It's not a progressive move just because it has black people in it, in a lot of ways it's a reactionary one cos it's just trying to prove a point. The WRONG point, like the I have black friends excuse.

Actually I think Aladdin wouldn't get made today as Arab-americans are a minority that isn't invisible anymore (plus! TERRARISM), therefore writers would drop the idea alltogether like a hotbutton hotpotato, don't wanna offend people, ANY people. But that's also why it wasn't a big deal then, Arabs don't didn't have the same kind of cultural baggage to cause any real controversy by being depicted in a major film. No other minorities have that kind of baggage that black americans have (for obvious reasons) There were some gripes about Mulan from Chinese Americans on account of it not being respectful of the legend, I don't know what kind of issues there might have been over Pocahontas cos I pretend that movie doesn't exist. I don't know what people say about the Emperor's New Groove cos that movie was a masterpiece lol But an important thing to note here is that lightskinned minorities are still preferable to blacks.Which suddenly makes me realize why Aida didn't get made- she was a slaaaaave ( ... )

God, if they'd openly adapted Witches Abroad it would've been so freaking awesome and with 1000000x more substance/interest.

HAHAHA oh man the backlash about Pocahontas was awesome because basically the Native American tribe that she was from said FUCK THIS NOISE and I think actually sued Disney over it. But no one listened because no one pays attention to them anymore ohnoes.

(Her name wasn't even really Pocahontas! Disney NEVER RESEARCHES ANYTHING ooh it makes me so mad. :E)

Okay, I'm wondering now... why does everyone seem to loathe this guy so much? :D *has no particular opinion either way, is just interested*

But ugh yes. I hate that so many equate being sensitive to the wishes of minorities with 'omg bleeding-heart-liberal wuss!!'.
(Actually I'm curious about the baggage you (QS) mentioned with black/white couples. Unless it's totally old hat to you and I should go find out myself :D )

I don't have a problem with Randy Newman, I like a lot of his music. I have a problem with him writing jazz music, because he doesn't. It's like getting Metallica to write the score to a romantic comedy.... which, could potentially be awesome LOL but that doesn't mean it would make sense :P

oh man it's the oldest old hat I don't even know where to start. But basically it has to do with the big two oppressions of racism & sexism, where the pecking order is white man>white woman>black man>black woman. The combinations here are going to be a mess either way but for different reasons?

Aaah, ok, that makes sense. Wrong dude for the job etc.

Thanks for the summary! My knowledge is kinda limited to vague notions of King Kong being allegorical... I shall have to poke around and do some more research.

Off topic: I was looking at my school's digital media website and the pink haired boy on there made me think "Hey, this looks like a boy that Aysha would draw, come to life, zomg!" so here: http://www.dm.ucf.edu/ <-- amusement.

And that's annoying about the love interest...I don't like that. :(

Have you seen the Artemisia movie? In real life her very brief mentor raped her and she was tortured to see if her accusation was true. In the movie they made it so they had a passionate and consensual love affair and she was tortured for refusing to say he had. I couldn't believe that they changed that story around. O_o

... Y..YIKES that's not just disgusting and wrong, it smacks of someone having a reeeeeeally creepy agenda when rewriting that story. Brrrr.

I know right? Having read the book on her life and being a fan of her paintings (she's most famous for her portrayals of Judith beheading Holofernes) I was a bit insulted. :P

LOL. Disney can't be saved. That's so sad... but probably true. I had high hopes for this movie, I really did. I thought it would be natural and hip and educational, but that seems to not be the case. I may have to give up and admit that the golden age of 2D animation (even racially insensitive animation) has already passed and I was lucky to even catch the tail end of it.

Yeah growing up during the disney musical renaissance had a profound effect on me (and my art!), but if all that ranting isn't an indication I'm just kinda bitter now. and LOL looks like I'm not alone!
