Duela got into her car, but she didn't start it immediately. She glanced over at her son and took in a deep breath. All she wanted now was to drive home, shut herself in her bedroom or office for an hour or so and just think.

But the worst thing she could do was pretend none of this had happened. She wouldn't be like them.

Duela looked over at him, frowning slightly, but she bowed her head slightly.

"For speaking to you like I did. And shaking you. I shouldn't have done that."

"No, you shouldn't have. You should have let me stay with Nadine - or brought her home with us."

"She was upset, Joshua. We had to leave." Her frowned darkened. "And she won't ever be staying with us."
