Eva-Maria WestbroekWozzeck is indeed a rather shattering piece, although I haven't heard it in ages (and I've never seen it performed). We saw Peter Grimes at the Met on Saturday, which was enough dark opera for one week.
Not that P. Grimes is what I'd call a FUN opera, but oh, what a score! What did you think of Mr. Griffey as Grimes? I heard the broadcast and was quite impressed, although Miss Racette's Ellen Orford was a bit wild on her hight notes. Miss Palmer's Mrs. Sedley was a masterpiece, though.
Agreed on all counts. Griffey was indeed impressive. Apart from fine singing, he -- that is, the character -- had a mannerism in which he frequently put a hand to his head, as if puzzled by all the turbulent things going on in his brain, which I found very effective.
Oh yes I do, you haven't seen me up close. Fortunately all that high-protein stuff and daily cardio are already having their effect as I hope you'll see soon....
