I asked my brother-in-law (who was just there with my sister and niece last month) for fun things to do in Kiev. He informed me that a girl could make friends just by walking down Kreschatik on a Saturday night, but then had these suggestions:

Two cool pubs: O'Briens and Art Club 44.

And a friend's e-mail I can send you privately, if you like.

Also, if you would enjoy being fed by Jewish people in their mid-fifties, I can ask my mom for contact info for a pair of life-long friends of hers who live near you.

Useful conversions: 450 grams is about 1 pound, so 200 grams is a little less than half a pound, and 100 grams is a little less than a quarter pound. That should be close enough to get you the quantities you want (and if you want a whole pound of something, just get half a kilo).

So how prevalent is Russian versus Ukranian in Kiev?

On the streets I hear mostly Russian.

Heavily accented Russian, but Russian nonetheless.

All of the official documents, advertisements and Television shows are in Ukrainian.

Though some of the Russian programs are in Russian with Ukrainian sbutitles.
