History Thing 008 - Fine and Dandy

Aug 26, 2012 11:24

(This one is incredibly lazy of me, because I know this particular History Thing by heart. Also: bet you thought I'd forgotten these!)

Okay, so, hands up those of you who've heard of Beau Brummell!

... now, put your hand down if you've heard about him from me.

That's what I thought )

*raises hand*

*puts it down*

I am largely disinterested in fashion. (Unless we're using my personal definition, which boils down to: "brightly-colored tights, very large earrings, flow-y skirts, boxer shorts with flamingos on them, and whatever else happens to catch my eye at the time.")

HOWEVER, I am very saddened that the cultural pendulum has swung away from men as peacocks, because don't they just love to put down "girls" for getting into things like clothes and makeup, which are so naturally unmanly, because they have better things to think about like hunting and eating red meat. And Playstation.

Totally seconding this. Glad to know I'm not the only one with a drawer of neon tights and too many pairs of large fake-crystal earrings. :D

Keeps it up, but then again, I have written and edited quite a bit of Regency romance. :)

James Purefoy is gold in that... a GOLDEN GOD.

\o/ - gold star for you ::waves around sticker sheet::

James Purefoy is *magic* in it, yes. He does such a fantastic job of 'utter bitch' :D

I raise my hand... and I'm inclined to keep it raised, because somewhere in my mind there is a memory of us discussing some aspect of Brummel, since I'm so into Regency. Am I totally wrong?

In any case, this post is GOLD and I had NOT seen BB TCM, so THAT IS GOLD TOO! All of it on Youtube, no less! :-D James 'Purejoy' and all good things that come with BBC!

On top of that: you writing a book from his point of view? This MUST be Christmas! Forgive my exuberance, but I am simply ecstatic!

I think we've definitely discussed him before, but I'm also sure you would have come across him on your own. He's very contemporary to Austen.

It is such a fabulous movie. A little more... ridiculous, in places, than a lot of BBC costume drama, but the cast is fab (Hugh Bonneville! I love him so in period costume :D) and it really is a good story. Pleased to provide linkage ;)

Oh, I've already written it and it's been out for a whole! I can send you a copy, if you'd like (call it a birthday present? ;))

I do wish that the trend for modern middle-class males was more than athletic shirts and trashy pants or shorts. So poor. I'm not that much of a fan of Regency fashion, but I do like a well dressed man.

I'd like to see a renewed trend for men dressing better, myself. I feel like they read magazines full of men in nice suits, and unlike women doing the same, they somehow fail to take it on board.

There are some men who look so amazing - and then there are the lazy ones who figure that they don't have to or don't want to bother. Give me a man in a three-piece summer-weight white suit with a plum shirt, fine shoes and a cocked brimmed hat and I'm putty in their hands. Umpffff!
