Yeah. If the writer says it, it's totally true. If someone with absolutely no connections to the writer says it, that's when we say "No, you're stupid, go die under a rock now."

Yes! See, that's part of the reason English classes annoy me. Symbolism is freakin' everywhere when you're an English teacher, apparently. Must be a requirement to be a pompous ass or something. I mean, that whole "the author isn't interpreting their own book right" thing just annoys me. If the author doesn't have a definite interpretation, then no one does. It's all entirely subjective if you're going to discount the author, which means that you can't really teach a class on it, because there are no right answers.

And if people had wanted to take a Philosophy class, they would have. English Lit=/=Philosophy

Yeah, I know. Ranty things are like that. Someone was complaining about the author telling people things that weren't in the book. It annoyed me.
