There was no containing Richard Castle when something was happening that allowed him to behave like a little boy again. The snow which had fallen thick and fast the night before was no different. He spent half the morning campaigning to build a snowman outside the precinct, a suggestion which was met with enthusiasm from Detectives Ryan and Esposito, but with a roll of the eyes from Detective Beckett. Castle responded to this by telling the detective she had no sense of fun, and she retorted by saying she certainly did, but not when there was a murder to investigate.
As they exited the precinct on the way to apprehend a suspect, Beckett noticed that Castle was some distance behind her. She didn’t think anything of it, though, until a snowball whizzed past her ear, just missing her. She heard Castle curse behind her, and turned around slowly, an eyebrow raised and a smirk crossing her face. Castle feigned great fear as she bent down to roll her own ball of snow.
She took aim, fired, and hit Castle squarely in the shoulder. Castle immediately proceeded to look as scandalised as possible, grasping his shoulder and staggering across the pavement towards her.
“Katherine Beckett,” he moaned, “you wound me. Literally.”
Beckett grinned. “Man up, Castle,” she teased. “I’m a cop, they train me in this stuff.”
“Snowball fights?”
“Aiming.”
“I’ll bear that in mind next time.”
“Probably for the best.”
