Characters: Ukraine and anyone else! Date: During the mistletoe event Summary: Ukraine's trying to figure out what mistletoe is exactly, it's never been a part of her christmas traditions. Warnings: None yet.
Canada had just finished her first batch of gingerbread cookies of the season, which meant that half was sitting on a counter in the spaceship and the other half was needing to be shared. For lack of anything better to carry them in, she carried with her a bowel-full of cookies that still smelled fresh from the oven. And Ukraine was going to get some.
"Katyushka! I brought you a treat, if you've got a moment."
"Ah Maggie, is good to see you!" Ukraine dropped her pitchfork back down into the earth from where she had been poking a strange plant with white berries that seemed to have grown over the gateway of her home.
"Listen, I heff question to ask you because I heff never seen plant like this and suddenly it is everywhere," she pointed to the mistletoe over the garden gate and again growing from the thatching over her doorway. She didn't miss the bowl in Canada's arms and gave her friend a warm smile while ushering her toward the doorway.
"It's mistletoe," Canada replied with a chuckle, happening to pause just at the doorframe. It was of her own violation, so she didn't quite notice how the mistletoe was effectively trapping them there. "It's a Christmas tradition, in the west. Have you never seen it before?"
"No, we do not have such plants around Christmas time. Mostly I celebrate with wheat and around religious icons of stars. Sometimes paint eggs and lots of singing, but never such an odd plant." She'll poke the white berries suspiciously and glance back at Canada.
England was still living with Ukraine, still happy there. It was nice to come home to such a sweet and reserved girl who obviously respected her. And England, herself, had come to respect her gracious host, as well. It was quite the shame she was not allowed into the kitchen, or England would have made many Christmas goodies for her. But she had already filled the house with smoke on several occasions. So, for now, England would just assist with the decorations
( ... )
Ukraine was up on the edge of the fence, balanced a little precariously while attempting to reach a hunk of mistletoe that seemed to have wedged itself firmly in the archway over gate.
Pausing at the sound of her name she looked up at England and smiled, righting the fluffy hat she had on her head.
"Ah, England! I em okie, but can you tell me what this plant is? It is everywhere and I cannot seem to get it to stop growing on gate." she explained pointing to the thick tangle of branches and bright white berries that were brighter than snow.
The British country blinked and followed Ukraine's arm. "Oh," she said, smiling lightly. "That's mistletoe. Have you not seen it before?" England walked over closer to her host.
"No, is not a plant you find in Ukraine very often even then it is only in small regions if at all." Ukraine will attempt to grab it again, leaning over the gateway.
"Why is it suddenly everywhere, is it because of christmas?"
America often wandered the Gardens when she was bored, which was quite often for someone like her. And so, she happened by Ukraine's home when said woman was outside her home. She had to greet her, of course!
"Hey, Ukraine!" She called out, walking closer to her. "What are you doing out here? Aren't you cold?" Because America's cold even though the weather's not so bad, so it must be cold for everyone else.
"Oh?" Ukraine turned around, standing on an overturned bucket and attempting to grab a handful of the mistletoe that seemed to have wound itself into the thatching of her modest home over the front doorway.
"Ah Amerika, is good to see you. And no, cold does not bother me, I did live for long time in Moscow and I get snow. This is not bad." she smiled and gestured the other woman over.
"Listen, I do not know this plant, can you tell me what it is?"
"Of course I celebrate things this time of year. I just do not do much for western Christmas time. My Christmas is in January," Ukraine huffed a little and looked at the plant in her hand.
"I do not heff such plants, and if I do they are not native. What is it?" she was curious now, looking imploringly at America for an answer.
