[Any ladies who check the vine today are greeted to a new face. She's wearing the default white shift, although she's carrying other clothing in her arms and has put a hat and rose-lensed white glasses on top of her head. The first thing she does when the video begins is gasp dramatically.]

Ah! It worked!

[She leans in closer to the mirror, ( Read more... )

[Well, it does seem to work, as Ema will be greeted with an image of a white-carapaced woman... alien... creature looking back at her.] Greetings.

... oh, I am not in charge, but I did think it was appropriate to greet you!

[Ema stares at the figure in the mirror.] It's nice to meet you...?

Does everyone here look like you? [Is she even on Earth anymore?]

No, not at all! Almost everyone else here is human.

[And then, remembering her manners...] Yes, it is nice to meet you! I am the Peregrine Mendicant.

Oooooh. That's good to know. [Hopefully you don't mind a bit more staring from Ema? She's not always the most tactful.]

Do you have any idea how this Vine works? It doesn't seem like a realistic way to communicate....

[And yet, they are. Strange. If she had her hands free, she'd take notes.]

While you're here, you might want to study the science keeping this Garden together. Now, I'm not really the science type, per se, but I think the technically term for it is “completely screwed up.” And who knows? You might have fun.

[Ema pauses before answering, looking the woman over in the way someone might when trying to figure out if she recognizes her. She quickly lets the matter go and gives her answer.]

If I have to stay here, that's exactly what I plan to do. What kind of scientific investigator would I be if I didn't?

What's your name?

A pretty poor one. I mean, case in point: these vines. What's up with that? And I've more or less decided that this is a neat little rolled up universe, but that doesn't exactly answer how, what, or why this is all going on, does it?

Oh, and I'm Death. Nice to meetcha.

Exactly! I don't understand how these things work at all! A plant like this is a really strange thing to build a communication system into....

[Wait, what.]

You're Death?!

(If you could disregard the fact that I'm braindead and failed to tell the difference between "voice" and "video" last post, that'd be great. ^^() Sorry about that!)

I think when you have to use "I asked the cat how I can get home" in a sentence, science has gone "poom" just a little bit.

It was the only clue I had! What was I supposed to do?

Just because it doesn't seem possible doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try.

True enough. There's plenty of weird stuff science can probably explain and just hasn't yet. Still, just saying: semi-sentient cats and organic instant messaging. Those ones are probably gonna take a while.

Well, if we're trapped here like everyone keeps telling me, then we should have plenty of time to investigate and conduct some tests on those things.

Scientifically.

Oh...hi Ema. It feels weird calling someone by name when they don't know me so...I'm Ibis.

Hi, Ibis.

Do you know why we're here? I mean, besides what the invitation says.

I don't know the exact reasons, no. I wish I did though.

Me, too. Thanks for answering, though.

How long have you been here? I just got here, but it sounds like some people have had time to settle in.

A pleasure to meet you, Miss Skye. I am Yukari Yakumo.

I am wondering how you define unscientific.

Nice to meet you, too?

Something that's unscientific is something that doesn't fall under the laws of science. Like plants and mirrors being used as a communication device.

border_phantasm December 8 2010, 23:47:07 UTC
But unless I am mistaken, isn't science about discovering why things happen the way they are thorough a "scientific method"?

Reply

stalker_science December 8 2010, 23:53:07 UTC
Of course it is! But there are also pre-established theories and laws that would require a lot of solid evidence to falsify.

I haven't really begun examining the Vine with any kind of scientific methods yet--but I plan to. So far the only theory I've heard is that it's magic. That's not very scientific at all.
