i have a lab newfy mix who is 12 so I have deep empathy for anything hip related. It sucks to see them in the kind of pain that means they cant move.
The best interim advice I have is: if she is in pain help her out of it. The safest pain relief for dogs appears to be aspirin (Acetacylic acid). The recommended dosage for aspirin in dogs is 10mg/lb of body weight every 12 hours.

Hip pain is complex and yet at their age its actually simple. It hurts, and it happens. Surgery tends to have limited success and the cost benefit ratio tends to be not very encouraging. That being stated it doesn't have to mean the end of walks or fun or general enjoyment of life.

Good luck tomorow

LJ wont let me edit :( Here is the fixed link Read more: Pain and Pain control in Dogs at VetInfo which is one of the most reliable sources of vet info on the web. My veterinarian recommended it.

Oh wow, thank you so much bb *HUGS* I'm not sure of her weight exactly, I'll call the vet and see if they have it on file, aim low so I don't give her too much.

*HUGS AND MORE HUGS* for the link!

Try giving her glucosamine; I gave it to Doyle when he started having hip problems, and it really improved his mobility. You can pick them up at any pharmacy; they're not expensive, and two pills a day will really help. If I remember correctly, glucosamine helps rebuild the coating on the joints/cartilege, preventing the joints from grinding together and reducing the pain. All I know is, it was a godsend for Doyle, and I've even started taking it.

Good luck, and I hope everything comes back clear from the vet's tomorrow. *hugs*

Warmth helps, blankets/pillows whatnot in her space so she's got some extra padding and heat. Someone beat me to the aspirin and glucosomine - you can find dog doses of that and condroitin (sp?) in Walhell or the PetCo/sMart nearby.

There's also dog formula aspirin too, human stuff sometimes has a coating their tummies don't like - or at least, my lab/chow's tummy wasn't happy with.

Luck and prayers!!

I just gave her a blanket re: your suggestion--luckily most of the places she is are carpeted, I've been keeping her away from the hardwood and laminated areas of the house today.

And thank you! I'll keep an eye out for the dog-specific stuff! *HUGS*
