Ray was used to bundling up for winters in Chicago, was used to keeping an extra set of boots in the back seat for when his inevitably soaked through with street slush. Alaska, though, didn't warm up enough to get slush. (Or it wouldn't until the Spring, people told him, then look out.)

What threw him off was how little people bundled here. Their neighbors explained that smart people kept a whole set of dry, warm things (like Ray’s boots) in the back of their cars in case they broke down, but for the most part-House to heated garage to work/store/restaurant/movie theater only required enough padding to last you the ten foot dash to the last door. No sweat. Or…no shivers. Whatever

So the thing is, there was a lot less crime in Alaska. There was even less crime out in the Mat-Su Valley where Ray’s transfer went through, but not so little that Ray got bored out of his skull, so Ray appreciated it. He appreciated it even more when Fraser’s new boss at the Anchorage Consulate (which is an hour’s drive both ways from their house if Fraser doesn’t insist on taking the bus-in which case, it’s four hours of Fraser’s day that Ray doesn’t get to see him because he’s stuck on public transport, which is just unacceptable
