Nowadays you can rejoice if people even read as much as Anne Rice ;) And that's far from great literature. Still better than Edward, though. *sigh* Sparkling vampires should be illegal, unless they appear in a Sims-game. Oh wait, that's sparkling witches there...
Well, maybe there's hope and they'll at least write smutty gay Edward/whoever slash fanfics *G*

I kept hoping for Edward/Jacob, but the Twilight fanfic I've found so far haven't really been...god.

Anne Rice is great, but I loved her before I realised people consider it trash. I was so young and impressionable... I'm kidding, I still love her :)

Aww, the first vampire novels and the Witching Hour aren't trash! I dig Lestat's book, I still do, I'm not ashamed to admit it. The only bad thing about it is that there isn't any smut. Boo! Hiss! And Interview, my, who couldn't dig Louis? Anne Rice just could write really well. Maybe her plots weren't always great, but her characters and language were superb. Can't say that for her more recent novels, though, I'm afraid... anyway, way above Stephenie Meyer.
