Talk to Manthra. She had some sort of something injected into her knee some years ago (I vaguely remember her saying somehting about "liquid metal" but it was like six years ago and she was kind of freaking out at the time, so my memory is probably wonky) as a hold off on knee replacement. She might have some ideas of where you can get a second opinion (which I think you should get).
My thoughts went in the same direction as rufinia's. I think you should get a second opinion (and, honestly, maybe a 3rd or 4th). With all the advancements in the medical realm, I really doubt that you're doomed. You just need to find that one person who caught wind of something useful who can point you in the right direction.
I mean, really, with all the old people breaking hips and the people with osteoperosis and such there has to be something out there so that you don't have to go through the prime of your life in agony.
