Why Buffy and Dean are made for each other

Sep 24, 2006 18:45

I was working on list as to why Buffy and Dean work so well together, when Angela posted her list.

Here’s mine:

Reasons Why Buffy and Dean are made for each other

1. They would be able to understand each other and the hazards of their lifestyle better than anyone else because they are both in the same line of work. She slays vampires and demons. He hunts demons and evil spirits.

Dean: We can kill it. Me and him. It's what we do.

Guy: How'd you do that?
Buffy: It's what I do.

Riley tried, but couldn't just accept the fact that she was the slayer. She didn’t need his help. Buffy had protected the Hellmouth for years before Riley came into her life and she would do (and did) just as well without him. She didn't need to be rescued. Buffy doesn’t need or want a white knight standing in front of her. She needs a warrior at her side.

"She needs a warrior, not another potential victim dependant on her skills. How do you hope to understand the complexities of a hunter’s heart? She must fight and struggle in order to be complete. It is her nature to hunt."

Riley didn't understand the whole Slayer deal, in fact, he was sort of jealous of her powers.

RILEY: It's about me taking care of you! It's about letting me in. So you don't have to be on top of everything all the time.
BUFFY: But I do. That's part of what being a slayer is. (Shakes her head) And that's what this is really about, isn't it? You can't handle the fact that I'm stronger than you.

Dean on the other hand, wouldn’t be jealous. He would accept it. And knowing Dean, he would probably think that it was hot. [I mean, some guys pay big money to have a beautiful woman throw them to the ground and slap them around for awhile]

“A girl who would not only accept who we are and what we do without question, but also help out without us having to worry about her getting hurt all the time. She’s fast, strong, can kick some serious ass and - she’s hot as all hell! I’m sorry, but I thought that was your definition of the perfect woman right there.”

2. Buffy and Dean have lost their first loves due to their jobs. The both have had bad relationships that never work out. Buffy’s first real love [Angel] didn’t work out because of what she was, the slayer. Angel was a vampire [under a no happiness curse] and she was a slayer. In the end, Angel ended the relationship and left her. Dean’s first real love was Cassie and it didn’t work out because of what Dean is, a hunter. Cassie ended the relationship. She left him.

SAM: You were in love with her, but you dumped her. Oh, wow. She dumped you.

CASSIE: Listen, I’m a little skeptical about this…. ghost stuff, or whatever it is you guys are into.
DEAN: (chuckling) Skeptical. Yeah, if I remember, I think you said it was nuts.

3. They both lost their mother very young, in a very painful way. Buffy came home and found her mom’s dead body lying on the living room rug. In Dead in the Water, Dean said that he “saw something really bad happen to my mom”, which suggests that he may have seen the body. Even if he didn’t, he was there when it happened. They would understand what each other are going through.

Dawn: Are you okay?
Buffy: I'm going to start charging money for every person that asks me that.

Dean: I’m okay. I’m okay! I swear to God, if one more person asks me if I’m ok, I’m gonna start throwing punches!

4. Both Buffy and Dean have very distant relationships with their fathers. Their fathers left them and they have hardly any contact with them at all. Buffy’s parents divorced and she rarely saw her father. Then he met his new secretary and he vanished from her life. He didn’t write or call. He didn’t even contact them when their mother was dying, much less dead. Dean’s father grew distant after Mary’s death and when he got a firm lead on the demon that killed her, John just picked up and left, no explanations, no call, nothing.

Dean: Call you? Are you kidding me? Dad, I called you from Lawrence, alright. Sam called you when I was dying. I mean, getting you on the phone, I got a better chance of winning the lottery.

BUFFY "Yeah, he's, um ... in Spain, with his secretary. Living the cliché. I called him when Mom got sick, he hasn't even...When he bailed on us ... I remember, Dawn cried for a week."
XANDER: Your dad's still AWOL, huh?
BUFFY: "The number he left for us in Spain is no good, and I've left messages everywhere."

5. Buffy and Dean’s flirty jabs and stubborn banter would play off one another so well. Dean acts hard, yet carefree on the outside. He jokes and acts sarcastic, deflecting fear and pain with humor and a carefree ‘no fears’ attitude. But sometimes in really tense moments, he lets his guard down and shows his true fears and feelings. “ Sam, look. The three of us, that's all we have. And it's all I have. Sometimes I feel like I'm barely holding it together, man. And without you or Dad...”

Buffy does the same thing. She deflects her fear and pain through humor and a carefree attitude, diverting her fear and worry into something trivial like clothes. Caring about something so trivial, gives her something to focus on other than demons. Dean does that with his car. Buffy couldn't always deal with all the terrible acts that she has had to see and do as the slayer and just needed to be alone. Dean would understand that, because he sees the same things.

Demon to Dean - “Funny, but that’s all part of your M.O. Mask all that nasty pain. Mask the truth.”

6. Dean and Buffy are both about the same age. In Sept 2005, Dean said he was 26. That should put his birthday between Jan and Sept in 1979. We know that Buffy was born in 1981 and she is a Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius, meaning her birthday is most likely Jan1-19, making her 24 in 2005.

7. They were both very young when they had to raise their younger siblings themselves. Buffy was only 20 years old when their mother died and she had to take on the responsibility of raising Dawn. And Dean had to pretty much raise Sam when their Dad became a hunter. The flashbacks even showed Dean (as a small child himself) taking care of little Sammy.

Dean: I'd give anything not to tell you this. But sometimes nightmares are real.
Buffy: Grown-ups don't believe you, right? Well, I do. We both know there are real monsters. But there are also real heroes that fight monsters. And that's me.

8. They both had to sacrifice their childhoods to become what they are. Buffy became the slayer at 15. Dean was 4 when their mom died and their dad began raising them to hunt. They were children who didn’t get to be children, children that had to deal with things that most adults couldn’t handle.
Dean - “Don’t be afraid of the dark! Are you kidding me? Of course you should be afraid of the dark. You know what’s out there.”
Buffy - “Sometimes *I* would like to just curl up in Mom's lap and not worry about the fate of the world.”

9. They both have a dark side and are very aware of it.

Btvs - “Death is your art. You make it with your hands.”
Btvs - “All those years fighting us. Your power so near to our own... Find it. The darkness. Find your true nature."

Dean: Yeah, I know, that's not what bothers me.
Sam: Then what does?
Dean: Killing that guy, killing Meg - I didn't hesitate, I didn't even flinch. For you or Dad, the things I'm willing to do or kill, it scares me sometimes.

It is that very dark side that gets in the way of relationships with 'normal' people. It's that very darkness that other people who haven't had to do the things that they have had to do, simply wouldn't understand. Dean needs a woman that isn't going run away screaming and hide, from the monsters...or from him, from the person he becomes when he hunts.
Dean: When I killed that vampire at the mill I didn’t even think about it. Hell, I even enjoyed it.

Both of them, they have a deep desire for violence, a need to hunt...to kill. As such, no long-term relationship would stand a chance unless the other person understood that and the only possible way that they could, is if they had that same darkness within them. Even SPIKE said "The girl needs some monster in her man."

Giles: (looks toward Owen) Seems like a nice lad.
Buffy: Yeah. But he wants to be danger man. You, Xander, Willow, you guys... you guys know the score, you're careful. Two days in my world and Owen really *would* get himself killed. Or I'd get him killed."

10. They both know what it feels like to be unnaturally brought back to life...and to truly believe that they were better off dead.

Buffy - "I think I was in heaven. And now I'm not. I was torn out of there. Pulled out ... by my friends. Everything here is ... hard, and bright, and violent. Everything I feel, everything I touch ... this is Hell. Just getting through the next moment, and the one after that ... (softly) knowing what I've lost..."

Dean - "I never should have come back, Sam. It wasn’t natural and now look what's come of it. I was dead and I should have stayed dead. So tell me, what could you possibly say to make that all right..."
"What's dead should stay dead."

11. They don't see it as a job. It is who they are.

Kendra: You talk about slaying like it's a job. It's not. It's who you are.
Buffy: Did you get that from your handbook?
Kendra: From you.

Dean: Hey man, like it or not, we are not like other people.
"You can pretend all you want Sammy, but sooner or later you're going to have to face up to who you really are."
Sam: Who is that?
Dean: One of us.

SPN - "You and me, we were born to do this. It's in our blood."

12. They both have sacrificed themselves to protect their younger siblings from a powerful evil being trying to hurt/kill said siblings.

Buffy jumped into the portal and fell to her death to save Dawn life. The portal needed Summers blood. It was either Dawn or Buffy, so Buffy jumped. She sacrificed her own life so her sister would live. Dean sold his life and soul to a demon to bring Sam back to life.

And while they did sacrifice themselves for love, at the same time, it was also out of loneliness and fear. They both fear being alone. Buffy and Dean NEED their family, to give them reason to fight, to live, to stave off the loneliness.

Dean: (to Sam’s body) Always tried to protect you. Keep you safe. Dad didn't even have to tell me. It's just always my responsibility, you know? It's like I had one job. I had one job, and I screwed it up. I blew it, and for that, I'm sorry. I guess that’s what I do. I let down the people I love. Y’know, I let Dad down, and now I guess I’m just supposed to let you down, too. How can I? How am I supposed to live with that? What am I supposed to do? Sammy? What am I supposed to do?

SPN DEMON- “You fight and you fight for this family, but the truth is, they don’t need you. Not like you need them.”
Btvs - “They all ran away from you. They always will. No matter how hard you fight, you just end up in the same place.”

13. Dean and Buffy are both eldest children, raised by a single parent in a single sex family, the Winchester boys and the Summers girls.

14. They both know what is like to bury their only parent. Buffy was only 20 when she had to bury her mother and Dean was 27 when he had to bury (technically burn) his father. Burying a loved one that dies before their time is hard enough, but burying a parent when you are only in your twenties is a pain that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

None of the Scoobies, with the exception of the late Tara, have ever had to know the pain of burying a parent. Buffy and Dean would understand each other's pain and loss.

I've heard arguing about the net between Dean and Buffy and Dean and Faith and a word I've heard tossed around to defend D/F is soulmates. Which, I'm sorry, but is so way off.

The idea of soulmates comes from Greek mythology, which believed that originally humans were combined of 4 arms, 4 legs, and a single head made of 2 faces, but Zeus feared their power and split them all in half, condemning them to spending their lives searching for the other half to complete them.

When people talk about soulmates, they often do so about people are just too similar. They refer to soulmates as 2 perfectly matched souls. Emphasis on matched, as in similar, as in duplicate. But that isn’t what it means at all. Soulmates aren’t supposed to be identical! It is one soul split in two. To be complete, you need a different half not two similar halves.

1. Dean himself is a glorious absence of control. Buffy is all about control. She doesn’t like to let go, to let her slayer nature take over and control her actions. Dean is wild and edgy. He loves to party all night in a tavern and do shots. Buffy rarely drinks and only gets drunk and does shots when she’s really upset. Faith is a partier, like Dean. They like wild music and doing shots in dark, smoky bars. Two party animals doing shots is a recipe for disaster. Dean needs someone like Buffy to take the bottle of Jim Beam from him, tell him he’s had enough, and take him home. Faith would just hand him another shot, much like Gordon.

2. Dean is the type to go in gun’s blazing. His style is more shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more and then when everybody's dead try to ask a question or two. And despite comments to contrary, Buffy’s the type to stop and think. She strategizes. She thinks things through first. Faith on the other hand.

Buffy: Wait. Stop. Think!
Faith: (stops, defiantly) No, no, no! (Starts again)
Buffy: (chases her) it's a manhole. Tight space, no escape, six against two, not unlike three against one.
Faith: And there might be more, (grabs Buffy's arm) so come on.
Buffy: You're just gonna go down there. That's your plan.

Faith would leap in blindly in a battle. So would Dean, he needs someone like Buffy to grab his arm and say “hold it, what if living dead guy has a husband hiding behind that mausoleum.” That’s also why Sam and Dean work so well together. He’s calmer, more rational, balancing out Dean’s wild nature. Buffy could provide the same thing. Faith couldn’t.

Xander: I've seen you post-battle Faith. And I know firsthand that you're, um... like a wild thing. And half the time, you don't know what you're doing.

3. Faith and Dean look at sex in the same way. It’s not about love. It’s about having fun. It’s about a little after-hours uhh. They aren’t interested in a relationship.

Dean: See that? (He points to the girl’s ass) That’s fun.

FAITH - No ties, no buddies, no relationships that lasted longer than... well, Robin lasted pretty long. (Grins) Boy's got stamina.
Faith: (excitedly) You wanna feel a connection? It's just skin.

Faith would give Dean some ‘rock em sock em’ and hit the bricks before the sheets cooled. Buffy’s not about random sex with some random guy. She’d stay and make him talk to her, which he needs.

4. Buffy was raised in a house, that most people would call a mansion, in Beverly Hills. She was the daughter of a high-priced businessman and an art gallery owner. She was the captain of the cheerleading squad and the prom queen. She slept on Calvin Klein sheets and wore Channel. Dean grew up in cheep motels and still lives in them to this day. He slept (sleeps) on 100count motel sheets and wears ripped jeans. Faith also grew up poor on the streets on Boston and often stays in cheap motels.

5. Buffy is the type to eat a healthy nutritious breakfast. On the occasion that we’ve seen her eat breakfast on the show, it’s always cereal and fruit. Dean on the other hand, makes a breakfast out of twizzlers and Doritos and packs peanut M&Ms for provisions. While Faith has said that she could live off popcorn.

Soulmates are sometimes called twin flames or twin souls, the one and only other half of one's soul, who holds inborn potentials that match and complement one's own. Buffy and Dean are like that. They are a lot alike, but they are still very different. It’s the combination of similarities and subtle differences that make Buffy and Dean fit so well together. Faith and Dean are just too similar.
