Comfort Food

I am wondering how often younger adults (say <40) have eaten stereotypical comfort food or are familiar with all the comfort foods out there- pork and beans, chicken a la king, tuna casserole, fried chicken and mac and cheese, pork chops and apple sauce, veggie lasagna, meatloaf, stuffed cabbage, Sloppy Joes, something and Tater Tots, etc. Of ( Read more... )

Huh. Most of those I wouldn't call comfort food, either. Mac'n'cheese, definitely. Fried chicken, maybe. My dad loves pork and beans. Some others I've never had but can see being comfort food to some people -- tater tots, sloppy joes, meatloaf. But veggie lasagna? Stuffed cabbage? Never heard of that as good much less comforting. Strange!

If I had to talk comfort food, I'd go with mac'n'cheese, spaghetti, cinnamon rolls, and chicken noodle soup. But I'm sure plenty of people have other ideas.

I'm going more with your view- we always had mac & cheese and spaghetti in my house. Chicken noodle is critical for colds. My mom also liked to make pork chops but usually with mac & cheese. Chicken a la king was the real stumper to me since I've never heard of it- nor stuffed cabbage. Tuna casserole has always sounded repulsive to me.

I've heard of Chicken a la king, but I don't really know what it is -- just heard the name. You're entirely right about restaurants not usually serving what is standard home cooking fare. Some restaurants specialize in that sort of thing, but why go out for things you can make at home? Your point about never having something that others consider vital is a good one, too -- my mom is deathly allergic to shellfish, so we naturally never had it at home. I've never had any to this day.

I polled my parents and the dishes were classic '50s dishes, apparently. My dad loves Chicken a la king and my mom made herself tuna casserole all the time. Who knew? My family eats all meat but my dad hates eggplant so I never had that until I got older.
