What percentage of college educated people are non-readers?

I am just curious. I have one friend who persists in arguing that no one really reads anything and that it is an outmoded form of entertainment. Maybe it's because he's younger, but almost everyone I know is a reader. I must say that I have decreased my reading quantities in law school, but whenever I go on a plane, I get excited to have the chance ( Read more... )

"No one really reads anything" -- has this guy never heard of Harry Potter? Y'know, those books that had people around the world lining up to get their copies ASAP? I'm sure none of those people actually read the books or anything. Door stops, that's what they were. Right.

I read for fun. My entire family does. Most of my friends do (including the ones younger than me). Yeah, I've known people who don't, but they're vastly outnumbered by the people who do. You know, now I'm tempted to post a poll about it on my LJ. Hm. Considering I've got several aspiring authors on my flist, I'm guessing I'll get a lot of "Yes, I read regularly" replies.

I think your friend who declares that no one reads is confused about the difference between what he does and what the rest of the world does. Turns out they're not always the same. Go figure.

Yes- put the poll up! I want to know. Even if your friends read a lot, put up something about whether their friends and family read a lot too. You are an engineer so it will help my case since his sampling is apparently engineering types. Everyone else I know says he's flat out wrong. Few people can say that in 5 years they read only ONE book voluntarily.

Harry Potter is huge. Even non-readers get into that, and I know a few other series are pretty big too.
