I'll just repeat what I wrote in another comment: The children's literature sequence was cool, but I really wish they had other heroes help save the day, not just Mary Poppins. How about Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh....the list goes on. A whole group of Mary Poppinses just seemed odd. And while they explained that J.M. Barrie donated the rights to his books to a children's hospital, the hospital theme was just strange.

And yeah, the dancing nurses were just over-the-top.

Yes, my inner five-year-old was glad to see the Mary Poppinses arrive but was confused as to which one was the REAL Mary Poppins. She cares a lot about stuff like that and has spent a lot of time trying to decide which is the "real" Willy Wonka, for instance.

As to why they did that...well, much is being made about how this is the first Olympics where all the participating countries are represented by female athletes as well as male athletes, so maybe they were trying to emphasize the theme of female empowerment. Maybe they feared that Mary Poppins' contribution might not be noticed if she was just one of several different heroes who arrived to save the day, and maybe they felt like they needed multiple Poppinses to emphasize the point.

Or maybe they weren't all supposed to be Mary Poppins. Maybe all this time there's been a secret organization of magical flying nannies and Mary Poppins was just the most famous one.
