Movie bits

When I started medical transcription training, I got out of the habit of borrowing DVDs from the library, so the backlog of movies I want to see has been getting bigger and bigger. So lately I've been trying to get back into the library-DVD habit. Here's some what I've been watching lately, with some comments:

Borrowing movies from the library is a wonderful thing.

I actually haven't seen any of these movies. I shall have to try to see District 9 and The Four Feathers, they both sounds very intriguing. (The others sound good too, but those two especially.)

Fair warning about District 9: it's very violent and gory. I don't feel that the violence is gratuitous, but there is a lot of it.

With that said, the visual effects are superb.

I'm usually the last person to argue that a movie has gratuitous violence, but whilst I agree with everything you wrote before, the climax suffers due to it featuring a lot of really unnecessary violence ( ... )

This is a role that didn't really need to be enhanced beyond what the Nigerians could have provided.

I agree that the Nigerians could almost certainly have provided sufficient villainy by themselves, in the film and in life. And yet, I think that the mercenary character serves a purpose because he demonstrates the most extreme form of inhumane treatment towards the aliens. He sees the aliens only as animals and hunts them for sport, and as the main character becomes more alien, the mercenary feels justified in hunting him along with the aliens.

But I could be wrong. I tuned out a lot of the violence, so I wasn't really paying much attention to his character.
