Lindsey had been working hard at his office, harder than normal. He had gotten that continuance to be able to go to New York at the last minute, but the work was still waiting for him when he got back ( ... )

The sound of his voice calling up the stairs snapped Cordelia out of her trance. With a sigh, she got up from the bed and headed out of the room.

"Yeah, be right down."

She found him in the kitchen and had to resist the urge to go to the refrigerator for something alcoholic. That wasn't the answer right now.

"Hey. How was your day?"

Not her usual greeting, but she figured it would be good to know if he was having a good or bad day before dropping the bomb on him.

"It was ok. Kept people from going to jail, and managed to get one child back into the hands of his mother instead of his drug dealing father. I think that makes it a good one."

He walked over and kissed her, as he always did when he got home, then smiled. "How about you? Any interesting travels today?"

She couldn't help smiling a little - despite what she was about to do, she still loved him. Which was why this was going to be so hard.

"No, I stayed home today. I haven't been aiming so well lately."

She suspected that was due to her anxiety. Harder to focus.

"Um, actually, I need to talk to you about some stuff. Can we... go sit down?"

Why do people always think bad news is easier to receive when you're seated?
