Well there are ...other versions of the town. I've seen a few of them when I was searching for my daughter.

One minute the town was covered in fog and then these...sirens would go off and everything was covered in metal grating and rust.

For me... it was fire. I saw the fog, too. But it had been a long time since I'd been there. So I don't know if anyone stills lives there or not.
