Hello, I am still here to talk about things!

Okay, I kind of spaced out for a couple days, but I swear I will get through this letter meme thing eventually.

K is for King's Quest! (from unimpressive)

Oh King's Quest. Nobody likes you anymore. The adventure game is pretty much a dead genre, with a few rare exceptions. Everybody's got to have some kind of fighting or jumping around or something these days, and merely sauntering around solving puzzles is passe. Long gone are the days of the text adventure, where you had to try several different ways of phrasing your command, dying several times in the process before you finally found the exact wording the program would accept. [I don't understand "make a freaking cookie, you sorry excuse for a viable source of entertainment!"] And oh, were there a lot of ways you could die! My clearest memory of King's Quest IV was a winding staircase. I think we ended up saving the game every couple steps because the controls made it exceedingly easy to fall to your death and the graphics made it difficult to see that you were going to. Naturally it got thinner on the way up, too. (Really, can't evil witches use freaking handrails? Well I suppose when they're teleporting about everywhere, it's not really their concern.) There were also instances in the series where you can miss picking something up at one point and be doomed and unable to go back later. And oh the punnery. It runs rampant throughout, but especially in the event of your untimely demise, which is not infrequent. The game is always eager to taunt you with a terrible pun custom crafted to your unique death.

Can you believe this shit's not popular anymore?

Sadly, the series jumped the shark at the eighth game, in which they caved and tried to make it into some sort of 3D hack and slash thing in a completely different place, starring some random guy instead of keeping it in the family of royals who had been adventuring since game one. We never made it very far in that one, so I'm really not sure what that's all about.

All this talk about King's Quest is making me want to try to play Gabriel Knight again. A more recent Sierra adventure series, though it does not have the word quest in the title! It's about voodoo and stars Tim Curry! :D (And strangely enough, less dying, I think. Though modern-day New Orleans is a safer environment than a fantasy kingdom or deep space would be. And Gabriel is not a policeman, so he doesn't have to worry about death by public nudity!) Unfortunately I think I got stuck because it kept crashing at a certain point last time, which is distressing. Oh well, it's not like I don't have other things I should be doing. (Though I'll probably be a tool and go play Final Fantasy XII for hours instead.)
