I'm here via a rec from dodificus. I adored this! I liked the way John's more lonely when he's around his family than when he's by himself - it makes a lot of sense to me, given how he is as an adult.

I loved the scenes you interspersed with the past - that they were written first person and with a totally different kind of energy - I'm not sure why it worked so well for me, but it did.
