Chunky pillars, yes, but its still beautiful, and awe-inspiring in its size.

I was trying to get a photo of that but the light was awful. Probably go back again and hunt green men and have another try later.

Amazing! I really love Norman and Gothic architecture above all.
I have never heard of Waltham Abbey and now it is on my list of "want to see". I am also very proud of myself because I can recognise typical Norman decorations in England. MInd you, our Romanesque style is monumental but it is more pristine - or with different decorative patterns. Definitely not that zig-zag pattern.

My father says that they must have had directions they followed on a parchment somewhere. I am familiar from school visits with Durham Cathedral (built only slightly later) and they have exactly the same decorative patterns on the columns. This is what I said when I first came into Wathham Abbey - that it was a mini Durham.

You took this thought from my head! Exactly what I wanted to add about Durham! The pillars there are monumental but almost identical. I was there three years ago and still I return to my pictures taken there. Pity I didn´t have a digital camera then...
