So... why? We have a now-filled-in quarry just along the road. I know they want to build houses on it, they're venting the gases.

I have only one thing to say to explain - BBC 1970s Science Fiction! That quarry was Skaro in Tom Baker's time as Dr Who and various planets in Blake's Seven (and I was even on the radio being interviewed about it).
