I'm absolutely certain that it's actually a French joke from around the 1920's, and one that translates badly into English, to boot. But I freely admit I have only anecdotal evidence to back this up.

The French huh? Figures!

I'm willing to believe the joke has historical roots. What I doubt is the story that Micheal O'Donahough and Chevy Chase told this joke all the time in the 70s, and that it became a secret handshake for the comedians of 'the new cruelty' ('77-'82). You'd think that if that were true then there'd be some better recent sources on that.
