“Which would be worse; ketchup and mayonnaise on pizza or unrequited love?”

“That’s a tough one”, Tatsuya hummed, “you also have some strange options there”.

Junno shook off Tatsuya’s remark with a light laugh but deep down, he was wondering just how deeply Kame was in love with Nakamaru - a love that may never be anything more than unrequited. And at the very moment Junno thought about it, he grimaced at the sudden and cold emptiness that slid passed him like a draught and caused him to shiver - for it had already become impossible for him to imagine a life without Tatsuya - and in a momentary lapse of forgetting Tatsuya was beside him, he mumbled, “Kame is really strong”.

Tatsuya gave him a questioning look, “Junno, you’re all over the place this morning”.

And it was true. Junno was lost in thought wondering how… after all that time… how was it possible that Kame still desired Nakamaru… and desired him even stronger than before. Junno felt the man deserved a Nobel Prize for his patience and acceptance of an unanswered love.

And it was so that Junno became aware that he was blessed and that while he could, he should make the best of that chance the universe threw him.

“Should I buy some more cups and plates for you?”

“Why would you?” Tatsuya turned around and asked. He and Junno were doing the dishes after breakfast.

“Then how about another clothes basket or a chest of drawer?”

“To put where? On your head?” Tatsuya laughed amused, “I mean, do you even understand just how small your place is?”

Without saying a word, Junno watched as Tatsuya tipped on his toes to reach the highest cupboard shelf. Without making any sound, all he did was move his soap covered hands under the running water washing the dishes. He was so unnaturally quiet that Tatsuya thought Junno had forgotten him so he said, “but if you’re that concerned about buying me things, then how about a vacuum cleaner? I heard Nakamaru mumbling about needing a new one”.

Junno pretended Tatsuya had not just said that, though he nodded as if in consent but replied, “or a new apartment”.

With this, Tatsuya stopped his drying of the dishes, “just how did you get from cups and plates to a new apartment?”

Junno hummed as though in careful thought, “wouldn’t it be nice having both our names on one mailbox?”

By then Junno had claimed Tatsuya’s undivided attention for he dried his hands and turned around facing Junno, “I know I’m slow so… tell me what I’m missing in this lil chat”.

So Junno held Tatsuya around his shoulder and proposed he, “move in with me, Tatsuya”.

A small smile escaped Tatsuya’s lips though he couldn’t say he was surprised. After all, it’s something even he’d been thinking about.

But he was stubborn.

And haunted.

So his pessimism was hardcore.

Even as Junno poured his heart out to him… even though Junno had just nudged him to take the next step in their relationship, it was also a malicious day on which that good-for-nothing-ex Tatsuya had wholeheartedly loved - had found a way, a loophole to suck the optimism out of a near perfect day.

Tatsuya said, “No”.

“Isn’t that too fast?”, Junno asked, his eyes wide with disbelief, “shouldn’t you think about it?”

“I’ve been thinking about it”.

“When? Now? For two seconds?”

Junno couldn’t tell if Tatsuya was sad or angry when he sighed and told him, “I’m going home”.

Junno let him.

But after a whole week passed and Tatsuya texted Junno telling him he’d be busy that weekend so not to come over and then another week passed with Tatsuya being a no show when it was his turn to sleep over at Junno’s, Junno decided that he’d still wait until Tatsuya was ready. He didn’t understand Tatsuya’s behavior but he wanted to give him space to sort his feelings out. And he would’ve given Tatsuya more time if it weren’t for a joint phone call from Nakamaru and Kame threatening to tie him by his penis in a bull pen if he’d been the cause of Tatsuya’s distress.

“Fix it”, Kame told him, “I know it’s not your fault but please fix it. Let him keep his happiness, Junno. He has always wanted it and he has earned it. He has waited for it and he’s enjoying it. And as much as Nakamaru and I love and cherish him, only you can fill that hole”.

Junno sighed, but there was resolve in his exhale as he said, “you really know how to pressure a man, huh?” grabbing his car keys, “and for your information, I’d no intention of letting him go”.

And that was how Junno ended up lay waiting Tatsuya at his apartment.

“Don’t you think it’s time we talk?”

Tatsuya was surprised at seeing Junno in his room. Junno had a spare key but that was the first time he’d gone over without Tatsuya being there, “we’re talking”, Tatsuya replied, his voice shaky and his eyes careful not to meet Junno’s.

“Tell me about your past”.

Tatsuya flinched.

It’s exactly this pathetic side of him that he definitely didn’t want Junno to know about. After all, it was only when with Junno that he came to know just how cheap and silly and shallow that past love of his was… and he felt stupid for still being affected by a stupid cheating ghost.

“What does my past have to do with anything?”

“Everything”, Junno simply answered with the pressing need for answers solid in his eyes, “because it’s the weekend but instead of being doped silly in vanilla love and drool over you wearing my frilly apron, I got scared after being threatened to have my penis served to Spanish bulls… so start talking. Tell me everything”.

Tatsuya quirked an eyebrow, and had by then fully accepted that Junno was all sorts of strange.

But Tatsuya had always considered himself to be a reasonable man. So he thought that Junno who’d loved him and who'd never wronged him, deserved an honest explanation. So Tatsuya gave it to him. And when he was done, Junno sat silently and was looking at him, seemingly trying to process everything. Junno was a reasonable man too so surely he must by then have understood Tatsuya’s fear. Or Junno can just get pissed off at him for not trusting him. So Tatsuya agonised because without meaning to, he’d indirectly likened Junno to some lowlife cheat from plenty years ago. As the clock ticked, Tatsuya remained tense, his knuckles balled up in a fist, ready for everything he and Junno had to have faded because of his foolishness - because he’d treated a man who loved him, like he was a criminal.

Junno was still quiet but had soon shifted his focus off Tatsuya. He was looking at everything but Tatsuya, and it ached Tatsuya’s heart more so than he’d ever felt pain in that place. Was that Junno’s answer, he wondered?

“Junno…”.

“Don’t…”, Junno replied, “don’t say anything, Tatsuya”.

Junno had called him, ‘Tatsuya’, yet again. Over their time together, Tatsuya had by then fully compute that whenever Junno called him, ‘Tatsuya’, that whatever came after would’ve been important. So he sat quietly and watched Junno, his knuckles whitening more, his mind unthinking, his nose bearing the slow burning in his nostrils as he tried his best to hold back the tears.

Even though he’d no reason to cry;

Because Junno was the victim.

For Junno to have invited him to move in together meant that Junno was constantly thinking about him, thinking about them and a life they could build together, a life that was already great. Tatsuya grew even more infuriated with himself.

Junno was going to leave him.

He was almost sure.

Junno was going to leave him and the heavy baggage that he carried.

And just as Tatsuya found it hard to sit still, Junno finally looked in his direction with eyes deep and thinking and eyebrows furrowed in pensiveness - his lips slowly opened and closed as though unsure of what to say. But it must have been then that Junno saw the ghastliness in Tatsuya’s knuckles and heard the trembling in his breathing, for Junno’s face almost suddenly softened into concern for the Love spring had handed him - his countenance changed into a knitted frown of sadness as he wondered, ‘just what the hell had the seasons done to my Uepi?’ And so he said, “then, I suppose I’ll just have to prove it to you”.

Tatsuya was staring at him, bite marks already red on his lips, “no, you shouldn’t need to go through the trouble of proving anything to satisfy my own uncalled for… my own selfish insecurity”, he griped, holding on to his knees as if they would at any time have collapsed beneath him, “but I’m the problem, Junno. Not you”.

“There is no problem”, Junno's reply was firm as he took Tatsuya’s drained knuckled hands in his.

“Jun-“

“Tatsuya, listen to me. All we’ve got to do is to keep doing what we’ve been doing”.

“But---“

“And besides, he left you and cheated on you but who’s to say you won’t be the one to beat at my heart then up and leave me?”

“No way!” Tatsuya replied appalled, “I would never betray you like that”, he rushed to convey, life suddenly in his feet and in his hands as he flailed his limbs about, trying to defend a future undying love he couldn’t yet prove.

“And that’s my point exactly, Uepi… we’re both uneasy but if we believe in ourselves, believe in our own ability and if I believe in the person you are, the person I liked and fell in love with, then I’m sure, that even if not forever, I’m still sure that if you’re the person you are now and I’m the person I’m now, that I will love you as close to forever as possible”.

“But Junno I---“

“Tatsuya, you’re annoying”, and that was the first time Junno had shown such whopping frustration, “it’s been months now, over a year and - day and night you’ve been telling me ‘oh I love you, I love you’ and I've repeated the same line to you like this lovesick parakeet… and now that I’m telling that not only do I love you back but you’re also all I need, you’re treating me like some senile fool who doesn’t know what he’s saying.  I mean, I won’t tell you bullshit that we’ll be together forever because shit happens - but right now, as far as my eyes and heart can see, it’s you, Tatsuya… right now, you’re all I see... whenever I look into my future, you're always in it… so let me ask again, ‘do you need me?’”

At that, Tatsuya felt utterly undeserving of this man - undeserving of Junno’s love and Junno’s faith in him - and so his nostrils burned even more as his eyes brimmed over like a waterfall.

Junno’s very existence gave Tatsuya something new to believe in;

- happiness.

A happiness that was whole;

- a happiness that, if there were a field of daisies outside, then the world would’ve found him skipping and singing about just how wonderful the pieces of his and Junno’s life were fitting together.

Love was one scary shit.

But love also gave him chances.

So he held Junno by the collar and pulled him near.

“Junno…”

“There you go again”, Junno laughed, holding him and pulling him by the waist closer, “you’ve been calling only my name for a while now, so tell me, what is it?”

“I need you, Taguchi Junnosuke”.

Junno's face exploded into this supreme grin, “of course you do”, wrapping his Uepi in a hug, “we need each other”.

And isn’t that perfect?

“Junno…”.

“Would you stop that”, Junno chuckled, “You damn madman. I’m right here. And I’ve got no intention of going anywhere”.

Tatsuya was the man whose head of hair reminded Junno of perfect sunsets.  And Junno was the man whose slender existence promised Tatsuya the world.

“I’m sorry I doubted you”.

“I bet you are”, Junno laughed, kissing him on his forehead, “so now let’s stop talking about the past. I’m a tomorrow sorta guy”.

Tatsuya clicked his teeth, showing the start of a smile, “you must think you’re so cool right now”.

“Don’t forget the good-looking part”, Junno teased with a mild grin, “I’m cool and good-looking”.

“And shameless”, Tatsuya snickered, cuddling Junno’s head in his palms as he pulled him down again for a kiss.

And when they pulled apart for breath, a soft smile festered itself on Tatsuya’s lips as he watched Junno’s grin spread full and bright like the moon worthy of worship. He then squirmed and giggled like a virgin teenage girl, when Junno damped a trail of sweet pecks along his jawbones and said, “I’m hungry”.

Tatsuya cackled, “so you decided to eat me?”

“Can I?”

“Hmmm, I almost feel that’s a trick question?”

“There’s only one answer”, Junno grinned.

Feeling ticklish and heated with Junno nibbling on his earlobes and nipping at his neck, Tatsuya weakly managed to reply, “first, I’ll cook”.

“Boiling eggs isn’t considered cooking, Uepi”.

“But at least it fills the stomach”.

“Yeah, but you still don’t qualify so stay out of the kitchen”, and when Tatsuya lightly elbowed him in the ribs, Junno added, “and after all this talk, I feel like eating fatty-bad-for-my-health-food, so let’s go find a Pizza Hut or I might just eat you”.

Tatsuya was laughing at Junno’s weird peckishness when he replied, “there’s one a 10 minutes’ drive from here”.

Junno was smiling as he grabbed his coat, “See Uepi?”

“See what?”

“The universe loves us”.

Indeed.

It felt as though the universe was making it up to him.

Like ducks in a row, the tiny pieces were finally lining up in order.

And at the thought, Tatsuya burst into laughter. A laugh that was haughty and beautiful like a fair day of sunshine at the promised end of winter, “what am I going to do with you, um?”

“What else?” Junno asked, shutting the door behind them as they headed out, “you’ll love me, of course”.

Tatsuya was all smiles, “unless you dare to sully the sacredness of pizza by topping it with mayonnaise or ketchup”.

At this, Junno’s laugh was loud and echoed all the way down the hallway as they walked towards the elevator, “then how about mustard?”

“Say that again and I’ll dump your creepy alien ass right now”, Tatsuya miffed.

But even then, they were holding hands.  And by the time they reached inside the elevator, they’d already kissed three or four times.

The universe and everything in it had grown more beautiful, Tatsuya thought.

It was so beautifully painted in the sight and feeling of happiness that if blinked too hard, Tatsuya feared he would perhaps have bawled his eyes out till he'd reached a state of having a snotty, red and unattractive face that not even his cute little pixie nose could save. But Tatsuya won’t have Junno laugh him to death just yet, so he refrained from crying like a sissy.

And before he could stop himself, Tatsuya was giggling at the whole matter playing out in his head.

“What?” Junno asked.

“Nothing”.

“So you’re just a laughing madman?”

“I suppose so”.

They were already in the car when Junno leaned over and snatched Tatsuya’s lips in his, “well at least you’re a kissable madman”.

“Thank you”.

It was like their very essence was lifted up and carried on the wings of royal butterflies - the way how Junno and Tatsuya’s laughter drifted in the wind and spread out a sort of warmth to accompany the early tranquil of March.

And just like that, the years passed like tiny floral blossoms that take their time to fully open into bunches of flowers - much like that one that captivated Junno that one morning in spring.

And guess what?

Even today, that morning remains Junno’s favourite season; the season he met, Ueda Tatsuya.
