Every Wednesday night at about 9 o’clock, Tatsuya would glue his eyes to the entrance of the coffeehouse at which he worked.

The thing was, Tatsuya had a secret. And that secret was his secret crush. And that secret crush was a customer who would come in for a latte just before closing time.

Tatsuya watched this man for months. Watched the way this man ordered the same flavoured honey apricot, and would then take the same seat by the window overlooking the Sumida River that snaked through the city. Tatsuya was also taken by the way the man would fiddle through his phone frowning as if he had been forced to look at something unpleasant. But the most peculiar thing Tatsuya would watch was the troubled look on that man’s face while reading his pocket-sized notebook.

Over and over following this same rhythm caused Tatsuya to grow conscious of the man’s presence, and so he would hurry to cash his order and even offered to deliver his drink directly to his table. This soon grew into a ritual and eventually, Tatsuya found out that his crush’s name was Junno.

Junno was tall and gallant like a prince riding his horse. His face was boyish, but his eyes were old and pensive. The first time he laughed, Tatsuya also found himself laughing. It was as if Junno’s mood was contagious and Tatsuya found himself falling into a gentle sweetness that was cosier than any tea.

One night as Tatsuya served Junno his regular cup, Junno asked him, “If you could try something new, what would it be?”

Tatsuya hesitated to think before replying, “ride a motorbike”.

Junno smiled with his usual shine, “I see”, he said, “though that’s something I would think you’ve done already”.

Tatsuya couldn’t help but laugh, “What makes you say that?”

“Just a vibes I picked up. You look free”.

Tatsuya couldn’t refute that he liked being in charge of his life - it’s something he'd always thought was normal so he asked, “Aren’t you free?”

Junno took a slow drink while contemplatively turning the mug round and around in his hands, “freedom has consequences”.

Much to Tatsuya’s displeasure, the conversation was left at that because Tatsuya got called in the back to help with cleaning up. But for days after, the dialogue kept playing in his head and he could hardly wait for next time. And so when it was Wednesday again, Tatsuya was quick to confirm Junno’s order. But to his surprise, Junno stopped him and said, “Today, I’ll try something new”.

Eyes rounded in surprise, Tatsuya replied with, “and what will you have?”

Quickly scanning the menu board, Junno ordered, “a lavender earl grey latte”.

When Tatsuya delivered the latte, he couldn’t help but ask, “Is everything OK?”

Junno smiled, “it all depends on how well I like this latte”.

Watching Junno hesitant to take his first sip Tatsuya asked, “what’s up with that?” because for months now, Junno had never once changed his order till that moment.

“I know such a childish thing can’t compare to your bounty hunting motorbike, but I just wanted try something new”.

Tatsuya nodded, getting more and more intrigued by this man, “so how is it?” he asked again, nudging to the lavender earl grey latte, “is everything OK?”

Tapping his fingers against the table, Junno smacked his lips together and replied, “I think I like it”.

And it’s so it happened.

Before Tatsuya could make sense of his feelings, thoughts of Junno occupied his time. From Junno’s strange behaviour to how good he smelled; Junno’s scent triggered an attraction that lured and trapped Tatsuya to him. It was only a whiff, after Junno had dropped his notebook and Tatsuya returned it, but the vanilla musk with sweaty undertone sent Tatsuya’s heart beating.

“This must be really important to you”, Tatsuya pried as he returned the book.

Taking it with a nod of thanks, Junno replied, “it’s not really that important”.

“But you always seem to carry it with you”.

“Only because I can’t decide on the list”.

Profoundly intrigued Tatsuya further asked, “What list?”

Awkwardly laughing, Junno quickly scanned the pages as he replied, “midlife crisis”, mildly embarassed.

Tatsuya still doesn’t get it himself. He doesn’t get why he’s so drawn to a man of bad jokes and weird quirks. But at times when it seemed as if Junno thought Tatsuya wasn’t looking, Tatsuya would steal a look to see Junno with this faraway mien in his eyes - eyes intensely focused on the little pocket-sized notebook wide open on the table before him.

So one evening Tatsuya told him, “I want to change what I said”.

“Change what you said about what?” Junno questioned, one eyebrow raised above the other one.

“If I could do something new, then I want to try going out with a man”.

Tatsuya didn’t miss the clear note of how Junno’s eyes widened and mouth dropped, “you really do live dangerously, don’t you?”

Tatsuya smiled somewhat timidly, “well that’s the easy part”.

“And the hard part?” Junno probed, cocking his head in wait for an explanation.

“Getting him to agree”.

Junno knitted his eyebrows in thought, “sounds like you already have someone in mind”.

“You can say that”.

And at that point, Tatsuya was having too much fun watching Junno becoming strangely flustered, his ears becoming rose coloured and fingers tapping faster against the table, “well I’m sure it will work out”, he nonetheless said, “I mean, who wouldn’t want their heart racing?”

Tatsuya felt encouraged so he asked, “Is your heart racing?”

“I suppose it is”, Junno blinked, a gesture implying that he was taken by surprise, “It might be beating a lil faster”.

Taking bravery in his own hands, Tatsuya stepped closer and asked, “could it be because of me?”

“Or it could be because of what you said”, Junno replied, putting his book into his pocket.

But Tatsuya was not deterred, “then if you could try something new, what would it be?”

Junno’s tapping fingers came to a stop and rested quietly on the table, looking from Tatsuya to the latte to the people walking along the riverside. His face was boyish, but his eyes were still ever deep and old and he was starting to look like somebody standing by a white line debating whether to step across or remain standing behind.

Junno opened his mouth to speak but then closed it, and when Tatsuya brushed his knuckles against his fingers nudging him to speak and set his mind free, Junno looked at Tatsuya and said, “I’ll take my latte to go”.

But Tatsuya was no fool. He wouldn’t let the plain and obvious object of his affection slip away without making sure Junno properly understood his intention, so he quickly held onto Junno by the sleeve and frankly told him, “and when I say going out with a man, I mean going out with you”.

Oddly, Junno showed no sign of surprise.

As a matter of fact, Junno just upped and left.

It’s from that that Tatsuya figured he made a bad move and so berated himself for being impatient. What did he expect confessing to a man who until just moments before, had only been a customer with whom he’d had the privilege of exchanging only few words.

But still, Tatsuya couldn’t explain it. He couldn’t explain why since the very start, he’d found himself attracted to Junno - a man who while handsome, was also strange with some sort of mystery. Then again perhaps that was the very reason; Junno was something new - that and how Tatsuya felt weak to the easy pace that flowed between them.

But did he just ruin his chances?

Would he ever see Junno again?

Was he too ambitious?

Was it too late?

Or was he already far gone madly in love and would come to know the pain of it?

Well;

“…”

“You came back”.

“I never left”.

Well as it were;

Junno never left, and was waiting for him at the door.

Walking in slow tiny steps and trying hard to read Junno’s face, Tatsuya unsurely asked, “so is this your answer?”

Without looking at him directly Junno answered, “I stayed, didn’t I?”

“Yes, you did”, Tatsuya answered with relief, though still in disbelief, “why?”

“Trying something new; it’s what I wrote in my pocket book some time ago”, Junno explained, “Though hooking up with a man was definitely not what I’d in mind when I made this list”.

Tatsuya smiled, snickered actually, “well serves you right for seducing me. But I’m strangely committed to worth your while”.

With jest suspicion, Junno asked, “what’s up with that ‘strangely’ committed?”

“Well you know…”

“No, I don’t know”.

“Well you hesitated before because you’re not sure if this thing will work out between us, right?”

Junno bit his lips, not wanting to admit defeat but, “alright, I guess that makes me strangely committed too”.

Tatsuya laughed - low and gentle, happy and hopeful, “are you regretting it already?”

“I’m rather strangely intrigued”.

Tatsuya laughed louder, “are we going to use the word ‘strange’ to describe everything about us now?”

“Oops, that’s strange, isn’t it?” Junno grinned, his face bright, his muscles loose, happiness painted in his eyes and around his lips.

Their laughter was a cheerful sweetness that echoed through the night.

“So while we’re at it,” Tatsuya began, “what do you say we add to the list and try our next something new together?”

“What do you have in mind?”

“Naked yoga”.

Half choking Junno replied, “You really are extreme, aren’t you?”

Tatsuya chortled, “or maybe I just want to see you naked”.

Junno was astounded at Tatsuya’s boldness, “well this is something I’ve never done before”.

“What’s that?”

“Dating a pervert”.

Tatsuya chuckled rolling his eyes, “And yet you’re blushing”.

It was a lovely sound. The way their laughter seemed to bounce and echo along the river.

“What else is on your list?” Tatsuya asked.

“Raise some chickens and ducks”.

Tatsuya gawked appalled, “maybe I should rethink this lil adventure with you”, he then chuckled, turning sideways to then sneakily look at Junno, “unless you kiss me”, mischief filling his eyes.

Junno eyed him warily, “you who just shamelessly wanted to strip me, now playing shy begging for kisses?”

Tatsuya cheekily grinned, “there are times I like to be pampered”.

They’d no clue if things would work out and yet;

One Wednesday some minutes after nine in the night, Tatsuya stood on a bench, grabbed Junno by the collar then leaned across and delicately touched their lips together.  Junno, not too surprised, took the plummy lips in his mouth and sucked the caffeine off Tatsuya’s tongue.  Tatsuya released a sound of pleasure and wrapped his arms tighter around Junno, and when Junno held him by the waist and lifted him into the kiss pushing his tongue even deeper in Tatsuya’s mouth, Tatsuya squeaked and shivered in glee as Junno’s kiss sizzled on his lips and the butterflies commenced their fluttering in his belly.

They’d no idea what a future they would get.

But even so;

That day till now, they both became each other’s - something new.
