Love;

It’s like stealing a cookie from the jar… and then the habit grows like a parasite… and by the time Tatsuya takes notice… Junno is all he can think about.

Tatsuya hadn’t realised he’d fallen asleep until he felt a gentle nudge on his shoulder and a voice telling him, “I didn’t want to wake you since you looked so peaceful, but the train is about to make its final stop”.

Tatsuya blinked about, adjusting his perception of where he was and who’s this man talking to him. It also took him a while to realise his head was still comfortably rested on the shoulder of this complete stranger.

“I’m sorry”, he apologised, startled in embarrassment, “that must’ve been uncomfortable for you”.

The man laughed pure white gold with perfectly spread pink lips, “don’t worry about it”, he replies, “there’s just something about a calm face that makes me happy… although I did miss my stop”.

Tatsuya shyly smiled at the glitch of softness and strangeness of this man.

When the train made its final stop, “sorry again for earlier”, Tatsuya apologised, his ears turning red not just from embarrassment but also the fact that this man is perfectly his type of man.

“It’s really no problem. It’s the city. A train comes every five minutes”, and with a wave of his hand just before they bowed their goodbye, he remarked, “get some rest soon”.

Since that day, Tatsuya wields a heavy love.

Three months later, he first thought that he was mistaken. He was in a bookshop in the manga section when he saw the same man. Calling it fate or just mere coincidence, he suddenly moved to greet him, but just as quickly, he stopped himself.  After all, what were the chances that he would be remembered? For all he knew, it would be only natural to forget random people met at train stations and such unimportant people are a waste to commit to memory. His situation was no different. Not to mention the fellow had a friend with him. So what an embarrassment it would be if he’s truly not remembered. They may even think of him to be a stalker. In the end, he released a sadden sigh, grabbed a manga about boxing and left the aisle walking the other way.

But Tatsuya didn’t know this - he didn’t know that he can’t run away from fate.

It happened again a few weeks later. This time at a jazz lounge Tatsuya has recently started to frequent on Friday nights to pick up any good man and then sweat the night away, when a conversation pulled his attention.

“Junno, I haven’t seen you around in ages. Where did you escape to?”

This Junno person grins, the same white gold grin and replies, “I’d an overseas business trip for almost a month. Just came back a few days ago. Why? Missed me?”

The woman at the bar he’s talking to laughs and replies, “ever the lady killer, ah?”

Sipping from the glass placed before him, he cheekily answers, “if I were then I wouldn’t still be single”.

“That’s because you’re a player”.

The grin this time reaches all the way up to the crinkles of his eyes, “that’s because playing is fun”.

“I bet it is”.

After Tatsuya watches the whole scene of the conversation, he can’t decide if he should be happy about the fact that this ‘Junno’ is single or be disappointed to find out that he’s not only a frivolous player but he’s also straight, leaving no door for entry for a gay breed like Tatsuya to enter and snatch away the tall portion of sexiness this Junno is. Even in the dim lighting of the lounge, Tatsuya could perfectly see the long neck and he wonders how it feel to cuddle beneath them… and those lips - lips that when he smiles, Tatsuya wonders what their temperature might be against his in a kiss.

Tatsuya is so lost in his lewd fantasy that he jumps disoriented like a fool when he hears, “hey, we meet again. The guy from the train, right?”.

Surprised, Tatsuya almost chokes on the Heineken in his hand.

“You mean you don’t remember me?” Junno presses.

Resting the bottle on the counter to hide how fiercely the nerves in his hands shake, he manages to reply, “how could I forget my train rescuer?”

Junno laughs, “with the blonde hair, I almost didn’t recognise you. It suits you very much”.

“Maybe you should get yours dyed too. I think it would suit you”, Tatsuya replies, proud of himself for following up with the conversation considering the shaking mess he’s in.

They laugh away into the night. And by the time they down bottles after bottles of alcohol and stagger to the train station, right before they bid their goodbyes, something Tatsuya can’t quite explain happens. But he knows what it is - it’s that seed called love - and this seed has just popped a bud.  And though he knew it would grow like a parasite, just for tonight, Tatsuya decides to nurture it because one never loses by loving. Instead, one loses by holding back. And perhaps, that’s the reason Tatsuya decides to take a gamble and invite Junno back to his apartment.

With just a kiss to the back of his neck, Tatsuya’s knees buckle. And when Junno takes his tongue into his mouth and marvels with it, the taste of alcohol has never been so sweet and tangy.  And when Junno enters him, all Tatsuya can think is that he wants more. He wants Junno deeper in him. He wants everything he can get from this moment.

And now, the morning after, Tatsuya is sitting up in bed looking at the man he’d spread his legs for last night - the man who still doesn’t know his name - until now.

“I need food, extra dark coffee and your name”, Junno tells him.

Breakfast is had from a cafe around the corner, and then they part ways.

The next Friday passes, two Fridays pass, and then it’s a whole month and a half before they meet again. It’s at another jazz bar but this time at one by the harbour in Yokohama. The music is low and sweet, the rainbow bridge sturdy and beautiful in the background and October is just about all wrapped up in the cool autumn sea breeze.

“Okay, so who dare dumped you?”

Surprise is an understatement to describe just how gleefully flustered Tatsuya becomes, “what makes you think that?” he stutters to ask.

“Well, you’re sitting alone with an entire bottle of Rémy Martin and looking all contemplative out into the night ocean”.

Tatsuya laughs at the jeer of dark comedy, “just reflecting on my life”.

“Oh oooh”, Junno replies in a teasing sound, “I can’t tell if that sounds good or suicidal”.

Tatsuya laughs again, “have a seat if you have the time. I’ll pour you a glass”.

Taking the seat offered to him, Junno asks, “and what are we drinking to?”

“To thirty-one years being an earthling”.

Junno chuckles and asks, “It’s your birthday?”

“Yes! Well technically it’ll be in another twenty-minutes, so drink and be merry”.

“What kind of a one man party is this? Where’s everybody - friends, family… a girlfriend?”

“Technically speaking, it’s now a two-man party”, Tatsuya grins, “and as for everyone else, well it can’t be helped. It’s a weeknight so everyone is busy with whatever”.

“And the girlfriend?”

“Hmmm, yeah, I’m still gay since the last time… or do you need a reminder?”

“I see”, Junno replies with slight hesitation, “so you really are gay”.

Tatsuya laughs, “well you really aren’t that different, you know”.

Laughing, Junno replies, “I guess you’re right”, holding his glass for a toast, “well then, let’s drink lots and lots to ring in your birthday. I’ll be yours truly for tonight”.

Tatsuya laughs, but it’s tight and overwhelming, wishing so much that Junno will be truly be his for nights far beyond tonight.

As it were, hours later as their spirited laughter scents the autumn wind, such wishful fancy isn’t farfetched as Junno, in the lapse of idle chatting asks, “so how about that reminder now?”

When Junno wets Tatsuya’s lips with a kiss the moment they reach the apartment and are behind closed door, Tatsuya feels like the sky is the limit leading the way to the bedroom - kissing with skin rubbing against skin - kisses that taste of Rémy Martin, a burning lust for affection and warm tongue.

When Junno gropes and enters him like he had nearly a month ago, Tatsuya inhales long and deep to the perfect fit that makes him tipsy in sweet misery, amplifying his belly butterflies to move about rampant in his stomach.

“Not yet!” he moans, clamping around Junno and sucking him way deeper in, “I want more” again, even if it’s just for the night, once again, he wants Junno’s everything.

“Well, aren’t you needy tonight?”, Junno lightly chuckles, dropping his hips in all the right places.

“Shut up”.

At 3 o’clock in the morning, every sound heard are breathless screams of pure bliss until they’re sedated from overheating in the night’s pleasure.

8 o’clock in the evening that day, Tatsuya’s doorbell chimes.

Though surprised to the core, Tatsuya manages to ask, “back so soon?”, his fingertips sweating as he holds and opens up the door.

“Well… being that I’ll be away for a month on business in Peru, I thought it best to take advantage of you while I still can”.

Tatsuya chuckles, “Is that so?”

“Consider it an extended birthday present”, Junno grins.

“Oh~ is that so?” he dumbly replies, breathing heavily so as not to choke on the ball of feelings playing ping pong in his belly, “another round of comfort for the road?”

“Well that can come later, but I figured I should give you a proper birthday present”.

Tatsuya raises his eyebrows in confusion when Junno hands over a bottle of classic wine, a lightly scented bouquet and presses a kiss to his left cheek.

“Last night was last night, but tonight, let me do it slowly”.

At this, Tatsuya’s heart rate catapults at the delivery of such a tender insinuating tone, and he laughs at the gesture of being given gifts normally given to a woman - delightful buttermilk roses with scattered stalks of orange marigold - and he now can’t help thinking to himself that he must really be brave or stupid to have himself hung up on a man who’s obviously straight or at least not one hundred percent gay - which makes Tatsuya vulnerable to love and it’s horrible heartbreaks.

“What’s all this?” he asks, spinning the bouquet in his right hand.

“I just told you. It’s an extended birthday present”, and then pointing to the bundle in Tatsuya’s hands, “and those are marigolds. They’re supposed to hold all the sunlight of autumn, and those born in autumn are said to be warm, friendly and easygoing”, and he pauses here, fingering the lobe of Tatsuya’s ear, “even though I may not know much about the friendly and easygoing you as yet, I know for sure you’re definitely warm in more ways than one”.

Tatsuya smiles, nibbling on his lower lip and blushing all shades of red, “I think someone loves me”, he smirks.

“Hmmm…”, Junno grins down back at him, “…perhaps”.

Perhaps he says… and perhaps he will…

But for now, Tatsuya finds Junno’s gesture adorable. He finds Junno adorable. Though, he now worries that even though he’s the one who had declared war to steal this man’s love by the first flake of snow, that perhaps, he himself will be hoisted by his own petard to have not just fall in love, but to keep falling.

And so when Junno leans over and pampers him with a kiss - a kiss Tatsuya gladly takes even knowing that Junno’s love still hasn’t caught up to his - on this night, he falls asleep with Junno wrapped behind him, reflecting that whenever they connect in warm embraces and whispers of sweet nothings in the middle of enigmatic shudders and sweet undones, he knows that Junno’s body never lies nor does it waste time fooling around.

Junno’s body totally responds to his.

And what’s wrong with that, uhm?

Nothing…

"Absolutely nothing", he smiles and whispers to himself as he tucks his body beneath Junno’s chin -

Because;

Be it a chaste kiss, many lewd nights in bed or a bony shoulder for a pillow on a train - love has to start from somewhere.

And his love, started on a train.
