So I got my grades back today, and....yeah. 2 B+'s, a B-, and a C (y'all know which class that is). Which isn't bad, per se -- they're just grades, and I'm certainly not beating myself up over them. But....I was honestly hoping I did better. And I ( Read more... )

Well, while the "anti-Semitic" defense is overused and often inaccurate (doesn't apply to that article, definitely), it does seem like Israel receives a lot more scrutiny in the media than other countries, like the international press is just wringing their hands trying to find all kinds of negative things to report. I have a friend in Israel and he's pretty critical of their immigration policies, among other things. Really the problem with Israel is that the vast majority of Ashkenazi/European Jews (many of the Russians who immigrate to Israel are barely even Jewish, really) are assholes who feel like they're the only ones who have a right to be there. They're the ones who tend to be pro-settlement and generally unwilling to strike a deal with/coexist with the Palestinians, and it's really lame how they tend to treat the Sephardim (and African Jews) like they're not really Jewish. On top of that it's really difficult for non-Jews to immigrate, for example, Zach (the friend in Israel) was trying to get me and other friends on facebook ( ... )

I can definitely see where you're coming from in terms of how much attention Israel gets, but I think that there's so much questionable activity going down over there (like the settlements issue, the amnesty issue you mentioned, etc.) that I don't think a lot of people can really help it, especially since the U.S. is such a strong ally (and because the U.S. gets a lot of scrutiny -- and justifiably so -- so would Israel ( ... )

Also, I'm really pissed off that Avatar actually made money, because I was kind of hoping it'd be Waterworld 2. And that parrot is so cute! I'd let it fuck my head any day, LOL

There are times (more often than not) when the more heavily hyped a movie is (and the bigger its budget), the more I want to see it fail. XD (Of course, the way Hollywood is, if a movie like Avatar bombs, a glut of Adam Sandler/Rob Schneider/Will Ferrel/crappy comedy movies follows soon after. :/)

As cool as that parrot is, I don't think I'd want it to hump my head, considering how painful it looks. ^_^;

I had a lot of problems with that movie that the article you linked to the other day addressed. Not even the mecha could get me to see it, LOL

You would think that after a fiasco like the whole "Killer Bee" thing, people might start to get a clue that messing around with nature is a really shitty idea. We talked about weather control in my Science & The Cold War class in the spring, and how it either didn't work or resulted in more stupidity...like the army-spawned rainstorms washing away American positions in Vietnam, and the fact that the seeded storm clouds had a very distinct look that people would eventually notice and be like "Wtf is with this cloud we see every day?"

My personal favorite is the whole "Let's find a way to get rid of hurricanes" idea that comes up every so often. Go ahead. Mess with the hurricanes, but I guarantee that the energy involved in those storms will have to go somewhere else and I wouldn't be surprised to see it spawn something that may be worse. In the 1950s apparently the idea was to hit them with nuclear bombs...

Also, the link to Wired.com means I'm going to be spending approximately the next 10 years of my life on that site reading awesome articles :D

I don't think I remember the "killer bee" thing -- then again, I thought it was more overblown hype than anything else?

Yeah, I agree, it's a really stupid idea, especially considering climate and nature is so complex and interconnected that it's nearly impossible to know the consequences of messing with it (climate change aside) and what effects it will have on us -- I mean, we know so little about climate in the first place, it's almost ridiculous. (And the only reason we are learning anything about it is because of fears of climate change.)

LOL @ the 1950s XD "Nuclear bombs will solve EVERYTHING!!!" Too bad some people I know still probably think this.....
