For the most part, cosplayers just look like people in costumes to me. Not necessarily like the character whose outfit they're wearing. I mean, I admire the work put into the costumes and all -- and the endurance to wear them (especially out here in California - it's still warm!) all day/weekend.

So basically, yes, I've seen a lot of people-in-costumes acting silly this weekend. *sighs*

*note/fact: I have cosplayed many times in the past! Like any other fandom activity, as long as it's fun and no one's getting hurt, I think it's fine! I have cosplayed as young!Kenshin, Vegeta (someone had the outfit and it was on short notice, I did not have the hair), Cagalli from Gundam SEED, Fate from Star Ocean 3, Pulse from Twin Signal, Tieria from Gundam 00, and probably others that I'm totally blanking on. I think next year I may end up as Rule63!Kyo from Fruits Basket, just because I'd basically just need an orange wig and the costume is otherwise uncomplicated and not-394857394857-layers. I overheat very easily. ^^;;

Oh I get that, and yeah, I agree that the work they put into their costumes is pretty amazing, and sometimes it's something I wish I had. But do they really have them on all day? Yikes! O_o;

Good luck with your cosplay! (And I realize I guess I could pull it off -- I mean, I think I'd make a good Gendo Ikari or Yang Wenli -- but it would require me to lower my inhibitions more than I can righ tnow. :/)

Fact: I remember being only three things for Halloween when I dressed up: pirate, vampire, and Indian. Creative, huh? :PPP

I know I was so many 'awful' (as in, 'politically incorrect but didn't know better') things for Halloween: Native American, Gypsy, ...oh, I'd thought of another one and now it's gone. Otherwise, I was quite often a black cat, princess, devil girl, ghost/zombie/dead, um...

We used to have a lot of 'dress-up' days at school for various reasons, so I know there were more costumes but I don't think any were specifically for Halloween. (like 1980's Day, Hippie Day, etc.)

There's also a lot of people here in gothic lolita, steampunk, etc. attire - not just cosplay.

Good steampunk is amazing. Bad steampunk looks like a person wearing clock guts. I've seen a few of each.

When I was 13, my Mom decided I was too old for trick-or-treating, and that year would be my last year. Within an hour of getting home from school, I dropped a big heavy textbook on my foot and it swelled up huge and I couldn't walk at all. ;_; So I didn't get to go out...

My elementary schools used to do "spirit days" as well; I did it sometimes, but if dressing a certain way was going to be too much of a hassle that month I didn't do it.

And I admit I like the steampunk aesthetic, but that kind of costuming is not something I'd like to do, were I to get into costuming in general.

Bleh, that sounds awful! Did you get to go out in later years? D:

Fact: I once had to dress up as a Pilgrim for elementary school one Thanksgiving (some other people had to dress as Indians :PPP), and Thomas Edison another time. Worst times I had to dress up in costume ever. -_-;

I completely understand you having a rough week - this week was terrible for me too. Projects + Tests + two papers = SHOOT ME.

But, at least you survived and can have a relaxing weekend. ^^ I say relax and not care until Monday. C:

Believe me, it could be worse -- I've had worse weeks, especially last semester where I had a ton of papers and exams in a short period of time. The only reason I don't have more going on is because I'm only taking three classes instead of the usual four this semester.

But, glad to hear you got through this week. Let us know how you did, okay? ;-)

And yeah, definitely plan on relaxing this weekend too. And this week won't be too bad either -- I don't have any readings for Monday, most of my classes on Tuesday are canceled, Wednesdays are free for me, and the only real things I have are a geology lab for Thursday and helping out on the first draft of the ES seminar project materials for Friday, neither of which should be all that difficult. ^_^;

So you think costumes are silly and cool at the same time? I guess that makes sense.

Halloween is the most important time of the whole year for me, but I can't really explain why. I guess because there's not as much pressure as other holidays, like Christmas which I really hate (giving and receiving gifts is such a hassle and if you try to go the "non-materialistic" route and make everything yourself it's even more stressful) and there's no religious affiliation (Halloween isn't the same as Samhain). Also I really like the macabre and horror movies and stuff like that, not so much the sexy costumes and excessive alcohol intake (though I got really freaking drunk last year, which was a mistake)

I found these costumes from links in someone else's livejournal and I thought they were really inventive and cool:

Yeah, I always love seeing cool costumes, but I'm conflicted about actually wearing any. I stopped dressing up for Halloween back in fifth grade, which probably says a lot. :/

Halloween was never a holiday that clicked for me, mostly because a lot of things about it bother me -- the tackiness, the horror elements (I'm not a fan of horror movies), the "sexy" costumes, the excessive drinking, the people who whine because they can't wear their Indian princess costume because it's ~~~un-PC~~~, etc. I'm sorry, but I can't put up with that. Though I certainly agree with you about Christmas and similar holidays (plus, I don't like Thanksgiving and Columbus Day, for obvious reasons). I guess this makes me sound like a total party pooper, but I'm not; I like kicking back, obviously, I'm just not a big fan of ~tradition~, especially if it's just not all that relevant to my life.

Those costumes are pretty cool, though -- thanks for sharing them! :D

Which holidays do you like, if any?

IDK, I guess the main reason I love horror movies is that a) I love the macabre, b) I have an ironic sense of humor and horror movies are rarely funny, often (the classic ones anyway) are pretty tongue-in-cheek, like the Freddy movies (LOOOOVED Freddy vs Jason), or unintentionally funny since the horror elements are rarely scary

To me, Halloween reminds me of being a kid, and I like relieving the few happy memories I have of childhood, IDK. I guess a lot of people see it as immature or holiday that's only for children, and I agree with you on the sexy costumes and excessive drinking. I like the more traditional costumes like old school vampires or monsters, and any attempt to make Halloween more "adult" is frankly offensive to me ( ... )

I guess I like Easter, mostly because it's pretty chill, I tend to have good memories of it, and the religious aspects of it aren't really all that big of a deal. And I guess Memorial Day is all right too. But a lot of other holidays are either just too stressful (like what you said about Christmas), are filled with Unfortunate Implications (like Thanksgiving), or just do nothing for me (like Halloween and Valentine's Day). I mean, I genuinely like all those holidays I mentioned, I just don't get worked up over them like some other people ( ... )

Ah, I'm sorry you didn't do well on the geology test. Given the number of people that didn't do well, I'm thinking the professor isn't doing a good job of teaching the material.

The bridge opening sounds like a fun time!

Trufax: Halloween is my least favorite holiday of the year. I really don't like it at all, but tolerate it for my children's sake.

Actually, there were quite a number of people who got A's on the exam as well. And not only have I had this professor before, but everything in the exam was covered just in his lectures, so I'm pretty sure it isn't his teaching. I did try to study as much as I could, but I guess it wasn't hard enough. :/ Then again, he does tend to be a pretty rough grader when it comes to exams, so. Oh well, if I continue doing well on my lab reports, and if I do well on the final exam, it should work out.

It was a lot of fun, thanks! :D

Yeah, I think when all else is said and done, I have to agree with you re: Halloween. It's just too tacky and stressful to be any fun. :P

Oh man, that sounds horrible. D: I'm definitely glad we live in an area where that sort of thing doesn't happen (even if it is otherwise suburban hell). ^_ ( ... )
