...The bit that really hit me was the mention of Corey Feldman.

Cause, well, he's lost two of them now.

That, and Wil mentioning that his son is taller than Jerry O'Connell...

...You mean Feldman's lost two friends to drugs now? Given his lifestyle, I'm sad to say I reckon he's lost a lot more friends to drugs than we'll ever know about, simply because they weren't all famous. :/

Re; Jerry O'Connell - Wheaton did a blog entry a while ago (which I thought I had tagged and realised I didn't, and have just gone on a horrendous wild goose chase to find again) that really made me smile, talking about finding an old photo from that whole era, and remembering what they were all like at that time in their lives.

I was thinking specifically of Corey Haim. Not just losing a friend to drugs, but losing someone he'd shared an iconic life-changing experience with...

*nods* Our little Wil was one of the first "celebrity" bloggers out there, and he's still one of the best, because he will lay his insides out for viewing online, and he's doing it to be writing, not as just another part of his publicity machine like so many use FB and Twitter for nowadays.

River Phoenix was the "first" death

Aiyah. You make me feel old. I don't know that I had a first death, b/c I was a child of the 60s and a teen of the 70s when drug use killed celebs left, right, and sideways. Maybe Balushi?

I'm sure there were other, earlier celebrity deaths that affected the Gen X'ers (like Belushi's), especially if their families were into popular culture...John Lennon comes to mind as an especially upsetting one. But what I meant by calling it the "first" death was that River Phoenix's loss had more of an impact on us because he was somebody our own age, and if it could happen to him, then it could happen to anyone.

As a side note, the person I've always felt sorriest for re: that whole tragedy was River's little brother Joaquin, who made the 911 call as he watched his brother having convulsions on the sidewalk. I remember thinking when Walk the Line came out how personal parts of that movie must have been for him; ie, playing someone haunted by guilt over the tragic death of a well-loved older brother.

I've been looking through Wiki trying to see if any of the celebs born w/in three or four years either side of my birth year kicked off at the age of 20 - 25, and I'm coming up blank. Everybody seems to have waited until at least their early 30s. So I guess I'm not remembering any because there aren't any. But my main point was that I don't think I would have been especially effected had there been any, simply because I grew up in a two-decade period where it was expected that many if not most celebs lived fast, and some would die young from doing so. Like Wil said, "...there's a monster in Hollywood..."

And I didn't realize that Belushi was 10 years older than my husband (13 years older than I am.)
