Training helps. Lots. I can has no music theory, and I don't actually know the notes on the ukulele fretboard (or the guitar, for that matter) and for the most part I'm too impatient to learn them.

Discipline, I needs it.

It's still work, even when you're trained. It NEVER STOPS.

When I played uke I used to spend hours figuring out chords, too. And like you I couldn't be bothered with learning the actual notes.

There's actually some pretty decent resources I've found as far as books and online stuff for uke (this book especially is a keeper, if you can ever find a friggin' copy of it in print).

But really, most of the time they either get it wrong, or my ears hear something different than what they're written, and I just end up inventing my own version anyway. Which is more fun in the long run, but lots more exhausting.
