an overlooked gem

in the midst of all the unrest in iran and celebrities dropping like flies, there's one small news story that's not getting very much coverage lately. i hereby remedy this, if nowehere else than in my own blog:

I saw her on the news tonight. Amazing. Last I heard, they said no one had told her yet that her mother hasn't been found. It breaks my heart.

I've seen this remarkable young girl on the news a couple of times in recent days (perhaps it's getting more coverage in the UK?) along with an interview with her father, who seemed shy and dignified.

The clip tonight showed her being flown back to France. She was surrounded by journalists, and there seemed to be jostling and pressing as she lay there in her bed. It struck me that crowding this girl as she recovers from her ordeal, sticking cameras in her face and demanding that she answer questions -- well, it made me uncomfortable.

Good news stories are important. But I think there might be better ways of reporting them.
