years ago, some friends of mine and I had to forcibly commit my then-boyfriend (well, newly-ex, to be accurate) and we asked, time and time again, that our names be withheld from him/taken off the report that he'd see.

Given that he was 5150'd as a danger to self and others, we were assured by the sheriff's dept that our names would be blacked out. HAHAHAHAHA.

Thank god that, when he came out, my friends lied like champions and told him I'd left the country. He'd apparently largely come to grips with his friends handing him off to the funny farm (badly needed, by all accounts, he was in for nearly two months and still released against medical advice) but not with my dumping him. Sigh.

I still have the contact information for a friendly judge who's willing to issue a restraining order if the ex is ever seen heading west. Fortunately, it's been nearly 20 years, so I think I'm safe. Probably.

I agree, the police need to be WAY more forthcoming re: risks and protection when reporting a crime/seeking protection.

seriously, right now i don't know if i'm more freaked out or pissed off about this. first the idiot cops wait an hour and a freaking half to respond, and then they put me in danger of being stalked by this guy once he gets out. NOT COOL.

i'm going to call the sherriff's department tomorrow, but i have NOT had much reason to put very much faith in them so far. grrr.

anyway, i'm glad you've still got that judge's number, and that your friends covered your back. it all sounds like a hugely nasty business. :P

How the hell can they assume you want your name and number given out like that?

It would never occur to me that the victim of a crime has to say 'Oh and by the way, don't tell him all my personal details'

do police everywhere suck this badly?

Sadly, they seem to.. or maybe we only hear a lot of the bad stuff :/

It's very true, they dont tell victims and witnesses what is expected of them or what will happen after a report is filed and they SHOULD. Ive had enough experience stopping to help at a wreck etc to know that unless Im the ONLY person around to stop to make the call or apply pressure to a wound, that I'll be moving right along..because getting supeonaed (sp) to court for something I didn't witness and sitting there all day unnoticed and losing time at work until the prosecutor turned at the end of the day and said "um.. who are you and why are you here?" sort of soured me on the experience.

Good luck getting this all straightened out. I suppose if I were an innocent person accused of threatening somebody and had no idea what was happening, Id want to know who accused me, but it still just seems dangerous to me to reveal that to the accused.

Unfortunately, you can ask to be anonymous yet it doesn't always happen. My brother had some legal problems a few years ago and wasn't supposed to be able to see the names of those accusing him because it was an anonymous complaint. The guy handling the case against him TOLD him that to his face. Yet my brother asked again, and the guy then showed the names and addresses to him. I was standing right there and this all happened in a courthouse!

I hope the crazy neighbor stays away from you. Better, that he gets committed or moves away or something.
