Cats and Cigarettes

I have come to the conclusion that Ketchup dislikes the smell of cigarette smoke. Not really a surprise. No one likes it. For the most part, while my mother was gone Ketchup has ceased to urinate on things, that is, once the overpowering smell of smoke had left. Now that she is back, seems she has once again started. Last night I discover that she ( Read more... )

I think the fact that the cat objects to the smell ranks fairly low on the list of valid complaints. Second hand smoke can cause cancer and a wide variety of serious pulmonary diseases. Is your mother refusing to be inconvenienced by the need to protect your health? Geez.

She's addicted. I'm just getting tired of it.

Did she mean that she's struggling with quitting? Because man, that is a hellacious struggle. I've tried and failed utterly. Believe me, trying NOT to do it is the stress factor, not the smoking. As addictions go, it's one of the worst. But it also sounds like there's a power issue going on. The French balcony thing seems like a reasonable compromise to me (speaking as a smoker who's not going to change out of my pajamas for that first and last smoke of the day for anybody!). She IS being selfish, but she probably also feels defensive. It might help if you acknowledge that you know quitting or cutting back is extremely difficult ( ... )

I know that she's addicted, and that it is hard to quit. I just feel rather hurt that she wont put forth the little effort to go out side, or to the French balcony. It's added stress to do that she says...I don't know.

We talked/yelled a bit more after I posted this..it was fun. Moo.

Dude, my apartment smells like smoke too, sometimes. I think it's because we're right by the bus stop, but LISA'S room doesn't smell like cigarettes, so I don't know what the deal is.

To add on to what others have said, yes it is hard to quit, but it's a serious health issue for you & the cat to have to breathe her second-hand smoke . . . let alone her health concerns.

Check out this reliable source:

My downstairs neighbor smokes - not even the one right below my apartment, the one below on the opposite side (I live in a 4-plex), and I still smell it sometimes . . . I hate it. I couldn't imagine living with a smoker again.

I hope the situation gets better, Qtap!
