WHILE FAR AWAY (1/2)

Title: While Far Away (1/2)
Author: qrn
Pairing: KiWoon
Rating: PG
Summary: Even distance could never separate them.
Author's Notes: Yet another spin-off to Renewal, and it serves as a prequel to Never Lasting. This story is dedicated for my precious readers who complained when I killed our beloved KiWoon (it wasn't intentional, I swear). It will show a lighter & cuter side to the whole story (you heard that right--no more angst ^^). I've decided to split them into two parts: this episode will focus on Kikwang, while the second chapter will shift to Dongwoon. Feedbacks & comments are welcome, as always. Enjoy!

No way.

Kikwang bit his lower lip as he the three words crossed his mind, gazing at the blonde boy in shock.

This isn't happening.

He was standing in the living room, staring at Dongwoon, who laughed as the other hyungs had expressions of disbelief plastered on their faces.

That evening, Dongwoon had come back from shopping with Yoseob. Although it was already dark, but 6PM was considered quite early for them as they normally spent more time out of the house. The first thing they did when they arrived home was break the news to their housemates: they had won a free two-week holiday to New York.

He's leaving.

"Are you serious?" Junhyung asked.

"But how?" Hyunseung pressed.

"Believe it or not, it was a random lottery draw," Yoseob shrugged. He opened his bag and took out a small golden ticket. "I think me and Dongwoon have spent too much time in that shop these past few months that we became their favorite customers."

Junhyung and Hyunseung's eyes widened. Doojoon smirked.

"Yeah, Yoseob-hyung and I are too excited to worry about what to bring," Dongwoon nodded. He turned and looked at Kikwang. "Hyung?" He walked over to the older boy, pressing a hand on his forehead jokingly. "You OK?"

Kikwang blinked and pushed the hand away, hiding his blushing face. "What are you doing--"

Dongwoon laughed, and Kikwang felt his heart flutter. "Because you haven't said anything for the last ten minutes."

I was too busy looking at you.

Meanwhile, Doojoon pinched Yoseob's cheeks playfully. "You're sure it's not a scam?" Yoseob stuck a tongue at him in response.

"Are you serious?" Junhyung asked for the second time, still refusing to believe what happened.

"Yep, it's true," Dongwoon replied.

"When is it?" Hyunseung piped up.

Yoseob had the biggest grin ever. "Me and Dongwoon are totally going. We are set to go in two days."

Kikwang gasped, putting a hand to his mouth. Junhyung and Hyunseung's jaws dropped; they exchanged uneasy looks before they took a quick glance at Doojoon, whose smile disappeared in an instant.

"What?" The oldest asked, sounding irritated.

"Um... we're leaving on Friday?" Yoseob repeated, unaware at the tense atmosphere. He looked at Dongwoon, as if demanding an explanation of what was happening.

Doojoon did not say anything. He left to the bedroom and slammed the door.

Yoseob frowned. "What's wrong with him? Shouldn't he be happy for us?"

Then it seemed to hit Dongwoon. "...Oh," was all he managed to say.

"What?" Yoseob turned to him. The others sighed, shaking their heads and left to their respective bedrooms. "What are they on about?"

Dongwoon grabbed his hand and they sat down. Panic was visible on his face. "Hyung," he whispered, his voice full of concern. "Doojoon-hyung's birthday is on Sunday."

Yoseob's eyes widened.

"Oh."

Kikwang lied on the bed he shared with Hyunseung, who was too busy reading a magazine. He sighed as he pondered over the fact that two of his friends--one of them being his crush--were going somewhere far away for two weeks. What was worse, they successfully got Doojoon to be mad at them.

"Hyung," he spoke up.

Hyunseung shifted his gaze to him. "What?"

"They're gonna get in trouble, aren't they?"

The older boy thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah."

---

The dinner was very, in a word, awkward. Yoseob and Dongwoon decided to sit with Hyunseung, leaving Junhyung and Kikwang stuck with Doojoon. No one had said anything; in fact, one could only hear the sound of the clock on the wall, as well as chopstick noises. Kikwang kept stealing looks at Dongwoon, while Yoseob refused to look at Doojoon.

Junhyung could not stand it. "Ahem." The other heads turned to him instantly--except Doojoon, who was concentrating on finishing his food. "Kikwang-ah, could you..." Junhyung coughed uncomfortably. "...pass me the soy sauce, please?"

Kikwang was too busy staring at Dongwoon to notice he was being talked to. Junhyung frowned and threw a small piece of carrot at him. The younger male cringed, rubbing his head in pain.

"Soy sauce," Junhyung emphasized the word, directing a Look at the black-haired boy.

Kikwang passed him a bottle of soy sauce and slowly continued to observe Dongwoon across the table, who just swallowed a huge spoonful of rice. He stifled a laugh as he saw grains of rice left on the blonde's mouth. Suddenly he had an idea.

I'll wipe it off for him.

Grinning to himself, Kikwang slowly put down his chopsticks. Next to him, Doojoon and Junhyung were still busy eating. His heart was beating faster as he carefully lifted his hand off the table and reached out to Dongwoon's direction. However, Hyunseung turned to the maknae just in time to notice the grains and handed him a napkin.

"Dongwoon-ah, you have food on your face."

Dongwoon was startled. "Oh." He quickly wiped the napkin across his mouth. "Thanks, hyung."

Kikwang was left with his arm hanging in the air, frozen.

After finishing the dinner, Doojoon left the table and went to his room without a word. Sighing, Junhyung piled all the empty plates into a stack and carried them to the kitchen. Hyunseung and Yoseob joined him in washing the dishes.

Kikwang and Dongwoon were left to clean up the table.

Now's a good time.

Kikwang tried to start a conversation. "Dongwoon-ah, listen..."

The maknae was busy collecting dish mats and condiments, not looking up.

"Dongwoon-ah, I..."

"What, hyung?" The blonde boy asked as he put the items back into the cupboard.

Kikwang sighed as he wiped a wet cloth on the dining table. "I need to talk to you about something."

Dongwoon looked at him. "About what?"

"I... You..." Kikwang gritted his teeth. "I..."

The maknae walked over and stood right in front of him expectantly, leaving only less than an one-inch distance. "Yes, hyung?"

Kikwang could feel his hand and feet going numb. He turned away to avoid the tall male's beautiful sharp stare. "I..."

I love you.

"I... uh..." He gulped. "Can I sleep with you tonight?"

The maknae's eyes widened.

Please say yes.

Dongwoon was about to reply when Yoseob interrupted them. "Hey Dongwoon-ah, I think you should swap with Junhyung and sleep in my room tonight. I don't think it's good if you stay with Doojoon, seeing how he is right now."

Kikwang's jaw dropped in bewilderment as Dongwoon agreed to Yoseob's suggestion. "Good idea, hyung."

Yoseob nodded, and returned to the kitchen. Kikwang sighed, pouting, but Dongwoon tapped him on the shoulder.

"Next time, okay, hyung?" he smiled, and made his way to the fridge.

Kikwang felt like his heart could burst any moment. Not wasting another second, he managed to blurt out the words. "I... I like you."

There. I said it.

That stopped the blonde boy on his tracks, and there was a short silence. Suddenly he turned around, his face displaying a mix of surprise and relief. "Really?"

"Yeah," Kikwang said it.

"Um, like, as in... love?" Dongwoon pointed to himself, as if unsure of what he heard. "Me?"

Kikwang nodded.

This is so embarrassing.

He looked down on the floor, thinking what would happen if he got rejected right on the spot. Suddenly he was pulled into a tight hug. "Dongwoon-ah?" he called out nervously.

"That's good."

He blinked.

Wait, what?

"'Because I like you too, hyung."

---

The next two days went by very fast. Doojoon decided to give Yoseob and Dongwoon--who continuously attempted to apologize but still insisted they wanted to go--silent treatment, while Junhyung and Hyunseung spent their time discussing what to get for his birthday. Everyone was busy doing their own things, but Kikwang was too happy about Dongwoon reciprocating his feelings. Despite having confessed, the two had no time for dates as the latter became preoccupied with choosing what to pack for the trip.

Right now, all five of them (minus Doojoon, who refused to come) were waiting in front of the security gate after Yoseob and Dongwoon finished checking in. They decided not to rush, and thus they were sitting near a cafe. The airport was fairly quiet, considering it was still very early morning. Junhyung checked his watch anxiously for the 6th time in half an hour. Hyunseung rolled his eyes at him.

"Will you stop doing that?"

Junhyung glared at him. "Doing what?"

"Looking at your watch."

"I just wanna make sure they don't miss the plane!"

"They won't!"

The two started to bicker while Yoseob stood in front of the huge TV hanging on the wall. A petite girl was shown singing a ballad song beautifully on the screen, and he could not seem to take his eyes off her.

"IU..." he muttered with a dreamy look on his face.

On the other hand, Kikwang and Dongwoon moved to another table to avoid listening to Junhyung and Hyunseung's pointless argument. The former rested his head on the tall blonde's shoulder.

"New York is far away, you know," Kikwang whispered.

The maknae laughed. "Yeah, I can see that." He ran his hand through the black hair affectionately. "Don't worry, I can take care of myself."

Kikwang pouted. "Two weeks is a long time."

Dongwoon agreed. "Way too long."

"You'll text me, right?"

"Lots."

"Don't forget to bring me souvenirs!"

"I won't."

"We haven't gone on a date."

"We can do that anytime."

"Can we sleep together?"

"After I get back, yes."

Kikwang's eyes turned to small crescents as his smile got wider. "Promise?" he held out his little finger.

Dongwoon laughed and nodded, entwining his own pinky into Kikwang's. They looked at each other, grinning ear-to-ear.

"Get back soon," Kikwang said, kissing the maknae gently on the cheek. Before the latter could say anything, Junhyung called out, saying that they would be boarding in 40 minutes.

"I-I should probably go," Dongwoon looked away, but Kikwang could spot him blushing. He watched the blonde boy put his phone into his pocket. However, he let down his guard when Dongwoon gave him a quick peck. "Distance can't separate us," the maknae whispered to his ear before getting his bag and walked to the security gate with Yoseob. The two gave hugs and goodbye waves before proceeding to enter the gate.

With butterflies in his stomach, Kikwang was sure of one thing.

It will never separate us.
