On The Road. . . ?

Jun 11, 2009 07:29

Contemplating a road trip with Wolfling down the West Coast, focusing on natural attractions, zoos and amusement parks. Ideally we'd go from Seattle to San Diego, but I'm not sure I could afford such a trip.

Still. . .

What would you put on a must-see itinerary?

West Coast friends: who would put us up for a night and/or feed us dinner and

adventures

Agreed, Monterey Bay Aquarium. Add the Muir Woods.

Cape Perpetua on the Oregon coast. There's also a wildlife safari place near Bandon (http://www.gameparksafari.com/), though I haven't been yet - am going in a couple weeks though.

Assuming the timing worked out, and you didn't mind sharing a queen size bed since I only have the one, you'd be welcome to spend a night at my house, and I'm a decent cook. :)

US 101 down the coast, catching Cal 1 at Monterey to continue south, is a beautiful drive (somewhat congested in towns, though). It takes you over the Astoria Bridge at the mouth of the Columbia, past every notable Oregon beach (Agate Beach, Heceta Head), through Redwood territory, and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Cal 1 goes from Monterey further south past yet more ocean vistas, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Hearst Castle. I haven't done the trip in a really, really long time but I recall that the area from Tillamook to Yachats was very pretty.

If you want to go inland down I-5, there's the Maount St Helens Volcanic Monument, the Portland zoo and arboretum, the formal Chinese garden in Portland, Multnomah Falls out the Columbua Gorge Highway as a side trip, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.

I know some kick-ass restaurants and tourist places round the Bay Area. I'd suggest a day wandering in Golden Gate Park, catch teh Exploratorium and maybe the Moma or the DeYoung (which I haven't seen but I hear it is great.

we could probably put y'all up and I make a mean omelet, if you don't mind sleeping on the futon in the living room and two curious cats.
