Katyń
On Thursday we went to Reading Film Theatre to see Katyń. There was a respectable turnout but it couldn't really be described as busy - perhaps a little surprising in view of the legendary Polish community in Reading, or perhaps not. Sometimes, as for some of the characters in the film itself, maybe it is best to forget.
It's a very atmospheric film, and deals with its subject quite obliquely, approaching the massacre from the point of view of friends, families and survivors. Having visited Kraków earlier this year certainly added to my viewing of the film. Penderecki's score was appropriately brooding and malevolent; the silence for the end credits was unusual but was the only way to draw the film to a close without desecrating it somehow.
