Book Review: The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco
I rather doubt I have anything original to say, so I shall just say that I enjoyed this. Eco's writing (and the translation) is always stylish and frequently has a humourous edge (and this point turns out to be quite pertinent) that indicates it is not to be taken too seriously. The Northumbrian monk William of Baskerville plays Holmes, and novice Adso plays Watson, as a series of murders take place in an abbey in fourteenth-century Italy, part Cadfael and part The Barchester Chronicles. You can see The Athenian Murders or The Oxford Murders in this; look at it from another angle and you can see The Shadow of the Wind, and there are probably many others.
